A human is a 100% deterrent. (Unless the cat is rabid, or you attack/corner it). It's also highly unlikely to mess with a large dog. But to all those "dog" owners with little white rodents.........

I think that both you and the Irish Setter are too big to be attacked by a bobcat. Take the pepper spray in case a rogue black bear shows up. Or something Much, Much more dangerous shows up..........................a human being.

We've seen one on our CYV preserve wall twice in the last couple of weeks. In both cases the cat was on the move and showed no interest in our backyard.

I do not doubt for an instant that an unescorted toy sized dog would be in jeopardy. A light and a little bit of noise announcing a human presence would be sufficient to discourage trouble, unless the separation between dog and human was enough that the cat believed it could snatch the dog and be gone before the human could intervene.

A setter sized dog is at little risk. Cats can be very dangerous, but the biggest Florida Bobcat weighs half what an average gundog weighs. They'd much rather disappear than fight, and they're very good at disappearing.

We used to live in Port St. Lucie. When we first moved there the population was about 70,000. We saw bobcats in our yard occasionally and walking in the street every so often. They never bothered us or our dogs.
