No warning? She was fighting a losing battle with cancer for years. Will not be surprised if the president nominates someone by Monday. It was reported last week, he was already reviewing potential nominees, which might mean insiders knew she was dying.

I knew she had a lot of issues but she certainly rallied through them all. I didn't hear her situation was grave (which was my point).
Trust me... Trump can nominate anyone. It's never going to happen. After what Kavanaugh went through.... never going to happen. Trump could nominate Mother Theresa and it wouldn't happen.

Bjeanj 09-18-2020 07:38 PM

I was hoping she would hang on until November. If you read her bio, you would know how she met all challenges.

Regardless, it is going to be very ugly, just when we thought it could not get more contentious ! In less than an hour and her dying words to her grand daughter are already made public.... "My greatest wish is NOT to be replaced by this president". Such an accomplished woman, honest to HER beliefs no matter if you lean liberal or conservative, she was seemingly honest and no one can deny what she has done for equal opportunities for women while obviously a devoted spouse and mother. Who in this day admits when they made a mistake in a vote like she has said publicly on some issues. No one ! But, as sharp a mind as she had to the end, she certainly knew what her dying words would bring about, no doubt of that. This is going to be ugly, our poor country, our poor people, we all suffer no matter which way you lean !

May she Rest In Peace.

I was not a huge fan, and McConnel and Garland is all I can think of right now because of my embarrassment at the time, besides these quotes from Justice Ginsberg which I ran across.

"I'm a very strong believer in listening and learning from others."

Plus her advice, all good, on marriage...

"In the course of a marriage, one accommodates the other"

"In every good marriage, it helps sometimes to be a little deaf."

RIP

And do. not be concerned by her words...."he" will not be issuing a cannonization speech....she represented the blue guys who make us look bad

Well... she will get her wish if the current person in office isn't elected for a 2nd term. There is 0 chance it will happen in his current term. Just like it didn't happen in the last administration. Too close to an election.
now... if the current guy gets back in. Ruth isn't going to be happy.

Taltarzac725 09-18-2020 08:07 PM

She was a great lady. May she R.I.P. and/or visit with the likes of Mark Twain, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr; Socrates; Jesus; Martin Luther King, Jr.; JFK., and the like. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. - Wikipedia.

Heaven forbid she hooks up with Ronald Reagan!

Be interesting to see how this plays out. She was a fighter that is for sure.

Her body was falling apart but she was still sharp.

Velvet 09-18-2020 08:54 PM

I have no words right now. It just hurts.

tophcfa 09-18-2020 08:55 PM

Just when you thought things couldn't get uglier! When the hell is 2020 going to be over?

Nucky 09-18-2020 09:18 PM

Isn't this the time to say RIP if you wish? Isn't it also the time to say NOTHING if you don't have something nice to say? The woman just died hours ago. Respect the timing a little. Nobody will ever know how I fell about her. I'm sorry she suffered and I'm sorry she passed. Some posts are just shameful. Pick 'Em!

I think we will have a nomination on Monday. President Trump was initially elected on the grounds that he will get Constitutional conservative Justices appointed to the Supreme Court and he has 112 days to get his third Justice appointed. It WILL happen.

noslices1 09-19-2020 05:03 AM

That is not correct

Those were not her dying words. She did say them, but it was several days before she passed.

If those were her last words, then it shows she was biased. Thought judges were supposed to be impartial.

Saddest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Worrying about her JOB! HER JOB!!!!

Always heard it said that “no one ever says on their deathbed that they wish they spent more time at work”. Who knew?

Klatu 09-19-2020 05:27 AM

She hung on when near death's door several times to try to make sure another president would replace her with someone equally committed to unfettered access to abortion. She did as much as any to conflate women's health, equality and ability to terminate the unborn so that today, politicians routinely speak them as much the same thing.

This will take the headlines quickly and totally and Wuhan virus will move into the background. First will come the praise pieces, comparing her to saints and giants. Next, the knives will come out for the nominees to replace her. Finally, the scheming and the plotting will begin. As we started off 2020 with the spectacle of impeachment, we will end it with the warfare of a SCOTUS bloodbath alongside an election/coup plotting battle for months, violence in the streets and assorted hysteria and mayhem.

I recommend prayer.

Apparently the words judges and impartiality do not quite work together

If McConnell meant what he said and forced through for Obama's pick, then he’s a hypocrite if he tries to push a nomination through so close to the election.

I think it will happen ... and fast. With the divisiveness in this country, and so many issues headed to the supremes, I think he will nominate and will get approved fast. Republicans still control the senate. Regardless of what Kavanaugh went through, they could do this in a day or two. Unprecedented? yes. Impossible? no.

ithos 09-19-2020 06:25 AM

Regardless of your political opinion she was an inspirational figure. RBG excelled at a time when being a woman and Jewish were significant barriers to success in the legal profession. Despite several personal tragedies and family demands, she eventually graduated first in her law class at Cornell University.

However, if a new conservative appointment to the Supreme Court is successful, her memory will be tarnished for many of her erstwhile admirers. She put her personal ambition ahead of the interest of the leftwing of the this country by not retiring under the President Obama's administration when her health was in serious decline.

graciegirl 09-19-2020 06:25 AM

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was small in stature but strong in her beliefs. She was a highly intelligent woman who championed women's rights and changed the legal framework of this country. Many people looked up to her and honor her now in death.

She made people listen by using her training and her power. She changed her world and ours too.

I did not agree with her often and our politics didn't mesh but she deserves to be remembered as a strong, smart woman who believed in her goals and loved this country.

May she find peace and her family solace. She was an American hero.

McConnell didn’t put through Merrick Garland’s nomination, because the majority in the Senate was Republican with a Democrat President making the nomination. With a Republican President and a Republican Senate it will happen. The rule only applies when the parties are different.

biker1 09-19-2020 06:33 AM

According to that logic then many Supreme Court judges should retire now or should have retired already based solely on the status of the Senate and White House as many are elderly. I am pretty sure nobody cares about whether anyone else's memory of RBG is tarnished. She served with great distinction and by all accounts led a great and productive life. That is the untarnished memory I will have of her (if anyone cares).

Far from a done deal. I can think of a few senators that would revisit the Kavanaugh appointment if given half a chance. Add to that the logic used for not appointing Obama's nominee in 2016. I can think of two or three senators that might be willing to block any nomination at this time.

noslices1 09-19-2020 06:37 AM

Do you remember how contentious the Democrats were during the hearings for justice Cavanaugh? Well, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

Can’t wait for the voters to see who they are voting for. Let the games begin.

I'm betting that we will quickly see, in real actions, the true definition of the words shamelessness and hypocrisy. Then again, what's new?

RIP Notorious RBG - you are a true American hero.

donassaid 09-19-2020 06:53 AM

I would hardly put her in the same sentence as Jesus, given her stance and rulings on abortion. She should have retired years ago but stubbornly held on, hoping to survive until after the election. There should be a mandatory retirement age for Supreme Court Justices, certainly not past tge age of 85 and, preferably, 75 or 80.

vilger 09-19-2020 06:54 AM

Unless the presidential election is a complete blowout by one side or the other, it will most likely be litigated in the Supreme Court. So it is very important that a new Supreme Court justice is confirmed before November 3 - someone who is easily pliable with no backbone would do nicely; I'm thinking that Ted "your father killed JFK, and your wife's reflection cracks mirrors" Cruz would fit the bill.

There were many calls for her to resign by Democrats under the Obama administration.

And there are many more such articles.

Now, many conservatives are glad that she didn't. If the Supreme Court takes a right turn, then I am confident that this prediction will come to fruition.
