This employee somehow took people's numbers and made authentic looking credit cards, good enough to fool Winn Dixie and Publix cashiers. They went through those little card machines just fine! Does anyone know how they can make plastic credit cards that aren't detected as fake?

I have had this happen to me. It is hard to prove who did it because you card is away from you. If the restaurant has cameras they may catch the culprit, but a smart thief will know where the blind spots are.

Chili's has a point of sale on each table and the customer runs their own credit card. The cost would be prohibitive for small business, but would eliminate this kind of scam.

Having to notify each company that you may have the credit card on file is such a nuisance, but glad the situation is resolved. Good for the credit card picking up on the strange purchase and addressing it immediately.

Did the restaurant offer to pay for a year of credit monitoring? The bank that carries our mortgage had it's records compromised. The bank is paying for one year of credit monitoring for us. We are notified if there are any changes to our credit report and they also give us updates when things remain the same. This may help to give you peace of mind.

My wife monitors our bank and credit card activity online every day. She takes just a few minutes out of her hectic social schedule. She also keeps tabs on my spending this way.

Same here. It only takes a couple seconds. Your charges show up as the card is used.

I got caught up in the Target credit card debacle and to be prudent cancelled my card and had a new one issued. Then, lo and behold, just a few months later, along comes the same issue with Home Depot. My husband uses cash for everything except cars and houses. I may need to follow his example. The thieves seem to evolve along with the technology.

I've been going there for 4 years for breakfast now and then and never a problem.
It's not Alfies that took your number but a bad enployee. This can happen anywhere. This is the reason this country is going to catch up with the rest of the world using cards with chips and a reader that is brought to your table and you swipe it and the card never leaves your hands.
