I too could have been here at 50 but I waited until I was 70 as there was much that I wanted to see and do after I retired.

The people I'm talking of have more money than, well they have a lot, now I know how they got it.

I am one of those who orders water with lemon to drink. Why? Because I do not drink when I eat...I should, but I don't (probably wouldn't eat as much). It has nothing to do with being "cheap". I sip on it while waiting for the order to come to the table. Why order an expensive something to drink and then walk off and leave it? Also, I am the driver in our family, so I don't like to drink and drive. As for tea, etc., I don't do that, either. I pour tea at home sometimes, and then end up drinking it after we eat, while watching TV. If we have wine, same thing. I do tip well (anyone of us who has worked and relied on tips do) and even add a note as to "excellent service", if it applies. Otherwise, just the tip....always.

Amen, sister. I always calculate 20% and add on from there. It's very rare that I don't leave at least 20%. I don't think I've ever stiffed a server.

My original post was an observation not a jab. It's just the people I was with have conspired to do the water thing and short the tip and that never occurred to me and I was shocked. I'm glad you're with me and tip appropriately, after all being a waiter or waitress is not a game it is how they feed their family. We overlook a snafu with service and chalk it up to it could have been worse. Life is to short rite? We just chillout.

I never had the impression that folks in their 70's did less than those in their 50's.

Must be because all the 70 year olds (and older...including me) still act like they are 50.

TV is what keeps us that way!!!!

Age is just a number based on birth date....activity and attitude do the rest.

Excuses, excuses--IMHO--the water/ lemon wedge people are just cheap-I wish all restaurants in TV would charge 50 cents for the lemon wedge--then we will see how many plain water drinkers there are and you better not be sitting @ a bar waiting for happy hour $$ to kick in==you're so obvious it hurts--

My wife and I never , never order drinks out and always order water and lemon. I don't because I am the driver. She won't because its a waste of calories.

At home I have a glass of wine with my meal and my wife occasionally

you seem to have an obsession about how people their money.

Better you spend your money the way you see fit and let others do likewise

True...As to the OP perhaps s/he said what s/he felt needed to be said and then left iy open to the membership.

I question management because the OP said the server was appeared poorly trained. training/orientation, etc is the responsibility of management

conversely to support your response perhaps the OP should have told management so management learned that they indeed had a training issue

First, even when a restaurant includes a drink, mostly wine with the meal my wife and I reject the offer and stick with water and lemon.

you define as "cheap"those individuals who switch from booze to water once happy hour is finished. what you label cheap others view as getting value for their dollar.

I can tell you that both my wife and i have a low tolerance for alcohol. succinctly stated I have felt a buzz after only one glass of wine/beer..forget the hard stuff one shot floors me. so some of those folks who switch to water/lemon may be doing so because they have reached their alcoholic limit.

finally my best friend owned a number of restaurants in N Y. he told me more than once that he didn't make money on food but over the bar

I have to agree with you. The last meal we had there will probably be our last. Not because of the service, the service was great. I had the grouper with jumbo shrimp. It ranks right up there with one of the worst meals I have had in a long time. The wife got her bang bang shrimp, which was fine, but mine had no flavor at all. I had her try it and she felt the same way. I squeezed a bunch of lemon on it and dumped a lot of salt on it so it would have at least some flavor. I'm not one to complain to the manager about poor meals I just won't be back.

Just another side of the coin. We just arrived home from a nice experience at Texas Roadhouse. We sat at the bar and had very good service. My wife ordered an ice water, no lemon. It came with lemon, no big deal. We were there for almost two hours. I drank three big beers not on happy hour price. We had dinner,the tab was $50, and we tipped 30%. This evening my wife drove and risked noones life and safety on the way home. People have reasons for doing what they do and drinking what they drink, and it's none of anyones damn business. And I pity the person that tells my wife she can't drink an ice water sitting at the bar
