Default Palmers Still The Best

With the majority of winter visitors gone, we decided to head to Palmers last night for the Lobster. Arrived at 5:30 and were seated immediately! Lobster and filet were cooked perfectly.Haricot Verts obviously freshly cooked and not soggy. Great jumbo shrimp cocktail to start and a Grey Goose martini with blue cheese stuffed olives! All in all, definitely still the King of TV country club restaurants.

I have found over the years, that when it comes to relatively informal restaurants, Napua at Mauna Lani (on the Big Island)...is hard to beat.

Smile Kapalua

Brings back memories. I am good friends with the people who built the home just off of the 2nd hole on the Kapalua Golf Course. They were sponsors of the Champion Golf Tournament that is held each year. Because of their fear that their children could be kidnapped they ensured that TV could not mention their name as owners on the course. The day after the Golf Tournament we played the course and that is when I learned how hard putting is in a major tournaments. The greens were very fast and hard to play.

We lived above the 12th green on the Bay course until 2015. From 1990 til then, we saw a LOT of change, not all of it good. Prices continued to escalate for all things. Housing was out of reach for locals and food was at least 30% more expensive than TV. Utilities? Anyone complaining about the cost here would be laughed at on Maui. A minimum of 5 times the cost here. We do miss the food and weather but TV has turned into a great fit for us. Now, if we can just get a few more fresh catch seafood restaurants...

Chat; Kapalua Bay Hotel was a great spot for dining and watching the sunset over Moloka'i. It's demise came when Steve Case ( AOL) bought a controlling interest in Maui Land and Pine (owners of Kapalua) and decided tearing down the hotel to build multi million dollar condos was a better thing. Many of those condos are still for sale today having never been occupied. Case took a functioning resort with 3 golf courses and ruined it.

A couple pointers:
Every putt breaks toward Moloka'i
When it's breezy, swing easy.
Pay attention to the hole videos on your cart GPS. Great advice on where to hit it.
Have lunch after at the Plantation House restaurant. Great views and food.
Play both courses.
If you like good sushi and other asian foods, make sure you go to Sansei at Kapalua. You won't regret it.

After over a dozen visits to the islands, including Lanai and Molokai...Kauai is still my favorite.

Maui being second...now that I play golf.

I like Kauai even after a very inauspicious first trip, of having someone throw a rock through the back window of our rental car while at the slippery slide parking lot...and stealing all of our money and identification. My wife's purse and my wallet were well hidden under the front seats, but the police surmised that they were in the jungle watching us and noticed that we didn't open the trunk. Of which, he said even tourists that did put their stuff in the trunk...had been ripped off.

'In those days,' only having $.32 to your name without being able to even prove your name...was no fun.

Which just added to an already crappy day, given that while on the beach earlier we heard on the radio...that Elvis had died.
