Default Looking for explanation - Panera

One of my favorite restaurants in TV is Panera. Good clean food.

When you swipe cc they now have a screen asking if you want to include tip.

I went to them to order the food, went to pick up my food, then cleaned my table.

I am a minimum 20% tipper at restaurants that have good service and food.

Yes I know it's my choice to tip or not but for those who are timid, it's a way to bully them into a tip.

Again, I know it's my choice to tip or not. I want to know what I am missing for Panera to push for tips at their self serve restaurant (without actually making the food)?

Just called corporate office and was told they recently added the tip feature due to customers wanting to give extra cash to employees. I didn't believe the explanation.

I agree with you. Completely. And Bogie Shooters comment too.

Sometimes people are inclined to tip out of guilt. Not me. Provide a service and I will tip if it is good enough.

I heard that Panera Bread was recently purchased by another entity. I dont know if this is correct. But perhaps "things" are changing.

haven't been to Panera for ages..last time we ate there I thought it was was overpriced for a cup of soup and half a sandwich.. plus---- it was not that good. I will drive to Brownwood for McAlisters if I want a good sandwich/soup lunch.

I have always thought that buying or selling half of a sandwich is a ridiculous idea. Give the customer a whole sandwich. How cheap can you get.

Jersey Mike's has the tip question on their credit card machine since they opened about 3 years ago. I didn't think anything about it, I hit no and move on.

For me the answer is simple-I do not like the idea of them asking me to tip; I think it is wrong, too much of the corporate world tries to tell us what to do; I always have the choice of not supporting them-hence don't go there anymore. If enough people agreed with me and did the same it would stop.

I agree. Jersey Mike's does the same thing and you have to click no tip with the kid standing right there staring at you.

I never tip for counter service. Ridiculous!!!

If you pay by credit card at the liquor huts at the Spanish Springs Square, you get a screen asking for (if I remember correctly), a 0, 15, 18, 20% tip. Just for pouring a beer? I always just throw my loose change in the tip jar.

Tell them to ask you about the service and "Tip" question as you are leaving the establishment. I NEVER tip before I receive their service...
