Default McCalls Tavern

We are new to The Villages and went to McCalls Tavern for their fried chicken dinner. It was as good as my moms! Will definitely return for more. It was 9.99 for 1/2 a chicken and 2 sides. I had to take 2 pieces home.

Default 1 Bad Experience...will try again

We visited on a late afternoon a few Sundays back, after the 1:00 football game. We had eaten during the game at Gators so just wanted something light before heading home. I chose soup, my better half a brownie a-la-mode.
The soup was hideous, the only flavor coming from it was salt, just pure salt in lukewarm water, like getting a mouthful of sea-water. The brownie was so stale, it literally could not be penetrated with eating utensils; I mangaged to break off a corner chunk of the brown brick and soaked it in the ice cream to soften it up. We reported all this to the waiter, he was sincerely very apologetic (and totally overworked). Not a good dining experience overall; would appreciate any other feedback on McCalls - we'd like to try them again.

I find McCall's hot and cold. Some days it is great service and great food. Other days it is not so great service and not so great food.

I like the place so I still go and hope I get the great day.

Default Trying to fail ??

Yes, it seems liike the McCall's people are their own worst enemies. A few years ago, they were known as THE WING PLACE in the Villages. A coupon in the paper would get one 7 or 8 wings and a beer for about 5 dollars. Whole neighborhood groups were there, and Wednesdays it was always packed, as was the bar. Abruptly, they stopped it. Even if they were not making money, those of us who enjoyed WING NITE would have paid a few bucks more. They still have the best wing sauce in The Villages. Then they stopped their homestyle food like escalloped potatoes and black beans and rice. Then they stopped the Thurs, night Taco Buffett. I could not even get them to serve me a grilled fish sandwich there. They had grilled fish, but didn't know how much a sandwich would be, so I would have to buy a dinner and they would charge extra for the bun. Too bad we never go there anymore. A lot of people have tried to tell them to bring back WINGS AND FRIES night, but all suggestions have fallen on deaf ears. They also took the popcorn machine out of the bar area because the hosts didn't like to make it. OH WELL !

I ate at McCalls yesterday. The food was good and the service was excellent. But then, it was 2:30 and the place was empty.

I ahve to agree with the salt comment. We went last month when down, and it was like everything was total salt. We got a large order of onion rings for the table and I swear that all you tasted was the salt on them. The got my dinner, and the mash potatos and gravy again tasted of nothing but salt.

I think that some of the items (onion rings, chicken, gravy, etc) come from a bag or a box - like Banquet) and have the salt from the preservatives. I know they are not fresh. But it is that way in a lot of places around here.

Do you remember if the mashed potatoes were real (with lumps) or processed (soupy). The first time my wife made me mashed potatoes she used a blender and I refused to eat them because there were no lumps. Since then she has always used a potato masher.

If I ever conplained to my wife about no lumps in the mashed potatoes, well there would be lumps my not in the potatoes.
