Default Odor in Perkins, Oxford

The Perkins on 466 in front of Walmart is our favorite breakfast restaurant. Their one egg Benedict on the senior's menu is always "spot on". However, the last couple of times we have been in there we have noticed a rather strong musty odor. One wouldn't expect that in a relatively new establishment of that caliber

Anyone else notice it? If so, please post here. I will then know it is not just me and I will mention it to their management next visit

Default Odor in Perkins, Oxford

DownEaster
I have only been there two times, the last being about a week and a half ago. I noticed an odor that seemed to be a "soured" cloth that was used to wipe off the table. Sound anything like what you mention? It's a lovely place, but that kind of turned me off.

Yes, "soured cloth" could describe the odor.

From my days in the Navy, this smell can be the result of a "sour swab" or mop. The mop would get that smell from not being cleaned properly after each use and not dried completely between uses in an open air area. Sailors often tie a rope to the swabs and drag them through the water behind the ship to clean them. You should mention the smell to the manager.

We were there 2 weeks ago and noticed the same odor in the back area of restaurant. We moved to another table upfront after we mentioned it to manager. Noticed him spraying something under the tables. We thought it was from something either spilled on floor or table that was not properly cleaned up or, they were using dirty mop or unclean wash cloths.

If we experience this same condition next time,we will walk out and wont return.

We finally got around to breakfast again at Perkins, Buffalo Ridge, and happy to announce offending odor no longer present. However, my favorite b'fast, seniors one egg Benedict, was not up to their usual standards. (Small over cooked egg).
Their overall track record with us is good enough for us to overlook it this time.

Default Why we quit Perkins on #466

Everytime we went in to the breakfast, they insisted we sit in the back on the right side near the kitchen, and that area always is very crowded, while the other areas are not. After hearing banging, crashing, employees eating during break, and just the noise, etc. we decided that they were not interested in making people relaxed and happy, only to put them where it was convenient. Twice we asked to be seated in an area other than that, and were told that "by the kitchen was where we had to go"...won't go back.
Much friendler and better food preparation at Perkins on #441...we live near Belvedere, but we always go to the Perkins on #441.

Did anybody notice the same smell at Ruby Tuesdays? It is from the salad bar. The ice that has melted. Not the food but the water. If the dishes are not wash right you have a smell. I have noticed in the water glasses also the silverware. I have the same problem at the house if I wash by hand. So if you put ALITTLE bleach in the water when you wash your dishes will not smell like wet dog.

Thanks for the bleach tip. Our new seasonal place in TV doesn't have a dishwasher.....the price you have to pay to stay the winter in paradise

The smell hits you when you walk in from the vestibule. I think it's the carpet. Smells to me like carpet that has gotten wet and never fully dried. Repeatedly. I doubt if employees smell it because after you're "in it" for a while your nose gets used to it.
There are a number of restaurants (and country clubs) that greet you with that aroma. (I learned not to sit near anything cloth hanging on the wall.)

While we're on the topic of aromas in a restaurant: Which is worse? A musty carpet, a spoiled bar rag, or a patron who has bathed in perfume/cologne before coming in? (To the point that you can taste them as well as smell them?)
