Default The Best Deal in Town - Really??

The advertised lunch deal at Glenview CC sounds great. $5.00 gets you the lunch special which normally consists of a small bowl of soup and a very small 1/2 sandwich. Of course, this price is only valid with the purchase of a beverage ($2.09) Now add tax of $.43 and your $5.00 special is now $7.51. Add a reasonable tip and your $5.00 lunch deal has now cost you $9.00. Such a deal!

Sure, there are minimums such as buying a drink in order to buy the special. Big deal. It is well noted so if you do not want to buy a drink to get the special, get something else or go somewhere else.

At Katie Belle's anytime of the day, there is a $5 minimum purchase per person. It is well marked, too. If you just go in for a Coke at the bar and get nothing else, it will cost you $5 per person. As long as the minimum purchase is marked in plain view, no problem. Either pay it or go somewhere else.

Our golf group ate there Friday and I had the soup and half sandwich special and felt that it was plenty to be eating at lunch. The sandwich was the turkey club and it was anything but small. As far as the drink being~$2.00 that is true but that is also for all your refills. You drink 3-4 glasses of tea or soda then you have more than paid for it.

Anywhere you go to eat these days, the (non-alcoholic) drinks are expensive. What's worse is that most restaurants don't put the price of beverages on their menus.

kentucky blue! how confrontational! your language! $9 to some is a serious amount of money for lunch! it might work fine for you, but you are wrong to judge that it is or should be right for everyone! some folks spend just a little bit more and get a dinner for the price. we're called budgeters - and it just might be how we got to live in the villages!

As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for."

The fact that GCC added the required drink purchase tells me that people b****ed about the $5 lunch, too. And the drink purchase is also because of people squeezing lemon wedges into the water glass to make their own "free" lemonade.

I'm seeing more and more nowadays that many people have never worked in a business where they can see there are fixed operating costs that the owners have to pay, regardless of whether only 3 customers came in during a shift when it's pouring rain etc.

Even if one has a bottle/can of soda from home in the car when they go thru the drive-thru at McDonalds or Taco Bell, the bill is going to be $5 or more without a drink. Of course, one wouldn't have to TIP at these drive thrus, so maybe that is the solution.
