Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation:

Pet dogs are generally prohibited at public food service establishments. However, your local government may enact an ordinance permitting dogs in designated outdoor seating areas of public food service establishments. The ordinance must include specific requirements established by state law, including permit fees and sanitation and safety conditions that must be met.

A restaurant must have a permit from the local government to allow dogs in the designated outdoor seating area(s) before your pet dog is allowed at a restaurant. Contact your local government to find out if an ordinance has been enacted and if the restaurant has the required permit.

Pet dogs are still prohibited inside food service establishments, including traveling through the establishment. The local permit only allows pet dogs in designated outdoor areas.

Can I take my pet dog to a restaurant?

If you like a restaurant (and the premise of free enterprise and business ownership), why would you expect them to risk losing their food/beverage licensing by ignoring the state law??

Cody's is the only restaurant in The Villages that has a permit to allow dogs to accompany their owners sitting outside. Any other restaurant doing it rishks a big fine.i

They weren't insipid when they were little, they were saucy and adorable and didn't shed. They walked on crayons and spilled chocolate-y substances and talked in church. But they have had the remarkable good sense to become adults and I plan to live off of them.

I like dogs and I like kids and I like opinionated old people.

I love my little dog but he doesn't need to go to a restaurant with me. It's hot out and he doesn't like sitting under the table while I eat. I feel sorry for those two pugs that I see tied up in the back of a golf cart while their owner eats or drinks at Cody's or City Fire. Leave them at home.

Interesting post although I might phrase it differently (and I use sarcasm as a means to keep my sanity). Absolutes, in my opinion, are always on shaky ground so I do like the qualifier in last sentence of the post.

Patty was spot on about people making investments and their time to build something only to see it pulled apart by some "busy body". Keep in mind that the minority makes the rules for the majority in this day and age. If you don't care for how an establishment is run, take your money and go somewhere else rather than "strong arming" the establishment to change to your individual "wants". The establishment can then determine if there is a significant enough impact to the business and can opt to change their business model or not.

HONESTLY -- AS A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL -- I am aghast at the way a lot of people in The Village just can't seem to leave their dogs at home. It is just not healthy to expose unsuspecting people to dogs which they may not like -- may be afraid of -- may be allergic to -- as for myself -- I believe that all the dogs -- even in the squares -- are just too too too much dog hair overload. And I believe you are not doing your pets any favors dragging them out to social functions -- if you can't bear to be parted from them -- then it would be my suggestion that you stay home. I worked in Neonatal Intensive Care Units for years -- if you seriously need to canoodle with a small being -- then I suggest you go to the nearest ICU and cuddle some babies and also to donate some of the money that you spend on all the riduculous doggy carriages to buy human baby strollers. Call me a Hater if you must -- but -- I love human beings not necessarily canines and would love to not have them sniffing at my feet in social settings -- keep the pets at home or on long nature walks -- not everyone is thrilled to see them.

Does anybody here ever think about business LIABILITY and trying to maintain insurance for their business??

Red Sauce and the other bars already have enough liabilities to worry about and insure, considering the drunks they serve and have to cut off before they go out and kill somebody with their car or golf cart while DUI. They certainly don't need the liability of dog fights under the table as I told about in other threads on this topic, and they certainly don't need the liability of a patron's dog biting an employee or other patron!

With a dog biting a waitress fresh on their minds, pet owners and servers weighed in on who is responsible when people take their canines to cafes on Lincoln Road.

Tom Tabor and Ross Guedry were having lunch with their best pals, Harry and Beau, Tuesday at an outdoor cafe on Lincoln Road.

Everyone was well-behaved. Tabor and Guedry had salad. Their goldendoodle and cocker spaniel nibbled on some doggie treats.

It was just another day on one of South Florida’s most dog-friendly streets.

Still, an underlying tension filled the air as dog owners and cafe workers discussed a horrific scare that happened on Labor Day weekend when a dog mauled a 26-year-old waitress.

“It’s terrible what happened, but people are responsible for their own dog’s behavior. Some dogs are more gentle than others,” Tabor said. “Part of the reason we come down here is so we can walk the dogs and they enjoy it.”

Tabor, Guedry and their pets were lunching at the Cafe at Books & Books.

Alvyn Lopez, a waiter there who gave the dogs a treat, says he’s careful when he approaches dogs.

“You have to know how to treat dogs,” he said. “You can’t just approach a dog any which way you want. If you expect nothing to happen to you, you’re living a fantasy,” Lopez said.

“People want to blame it all on the dogs, but the owners have some responsibility.”

It’s unclear what set off the cane corso breed that ripped into waitress Amy Calandrella’s lip on Sept. 1. When the Van Dyke Cafe server bent down to give a dog a bowl of water, the dog bit her lip. She needed more than 300 stitches and underwent more than seven hours of surgery to repair the wound.

The dog was released to the owner and no citations were given, according to the report by Miami-Dade Animal Services.

The owner of the dog, Teri Guttman Valdes, did not answer her phone Tuesday. Valdes, who lives in Coral Gables, is an attorney who works in labor and employment law and has represented police officers.

Although Lopez, the Books & Books waiter, hasn’t seen any dog vs. server incidents, Books & Books waiter Dan Mitchell said he has been bitten twice.

When a Dalmatian bit Mitchell, the owners quickly left and didn’t apologize. The second time, another dog bit his pants and left a small hole.

HUH? Don't know where you work, but are you really suggesting that total strangers show up at NICU and "canoodle"?

Insipid little twits? Which side of your family did you inherit the rudeness gene from?

We've had dogs and cats throughout our entire marriage of almost fifty years....especially while raising our bright intelligent charming children.

NOT ONCE did we feel the need to take the dogs or cats to a restaurant.

Our children were taken to restaurants from infancy on and learned good manners, how to order from a menu and how to eat politely. They have excelled in their adulthood (from childhood, teens, etc. on)....and to tell you the truth, we enjoy EVERYONE'S GRANDCHILDREN and CHILDREN.

They are all welcome in our home........all children, no matter what their age.

Our grandchildren are now a JOY to us........reward for having raised nice children........certainly NOT insipid twits.

My point is that if people are fulfilling their "need to be close" by never letting go of their animals -- then there are many nursery and nicu's in this area (Shands for example) that have very active grandparenting programs where volunteers sign up to hold and cuddle babies who need affection and touch -- and my point is perfectly clear -- it is safe to say that NOT EVERYONE LOVES HAVING ALL THE DOGS AROUND OUT IN RESTAURANTS AND THE SQUARES -- It certainly might be a problem for a lot of people...

You could say the same thing about kids--not everybody loves having all the kids around in restaurants and the squares--but as long as it's legal, there isn't anything you can do about it.

Red Sauce needs to get a permit. Don't sit outside at Cody's if you don't like dogs in restaurants, 'cause they have a permit.
