Default Removing Popcorn Ceiling

Hello everyone.
Any recommendations for hiring someone to remove a popcorn ceiling?
I was wondering if a handyman would be less expensive or not.
Thanks, and I love the fact that this site exists.

There have been several threads on this in the past, however one item you need to be concerned about, the popcorn ceiling MAY contain asbestos and if so this requires special attention. I would never use a handyman unless the popcorn coating was tested negative for asbestos.
Please be very careful with this.

If the house was built within the past 40 years, it is highly unlikely to have asbestos on the ceiling. Note that all non-manufactured houses in The Villages were constructed less than 40 years ago.

Personally, I would hire a drywall contractor, not a handyman.

So now we can devolve the discussion into a debate on AI search parameters questioning whether there is actually such a thing as a ‘popcorn’ ceiling.

I hired AB Drywall to remove popcorn ceiling, and I am glad I did.
They showed up on time, were absolutely pleasant, well mannered, and did a great job, at a great price.

For those that have had their popcorn removed, what are the benefits?

Have you replaced it with any other "detailing" or just left it plain?

Thank you

I understand not liking popcorn ceilings.

But I don't dislike them enough to want to go through the hassle and expense of getting rid of them. Same for textured walls.

Spend your money on a larger TV. Then you are looking at that, not your ceiling.

The process of removing the popcorn is just that, so you are left with an ugly untreated surface. The most common follow up is some sort of texturing, and then it needs to be painted.
I can't remember the specific name of the texturing. They apply some thick plastery stuff and then trowel it flat, but not perfectly smooth.

as far as the benefit, in my case the popcorn ceiling was 20 years old, and dingy, and cracking and when I had the place painted the painting contractor wouldn't paint it because he said it would likely peel off in places and leave a mess. The only other benefit is that I like the look of it better. Other than the fact that it was coming apart, it was just an esthetic improvement. Many people aren't bothered by it, but we grew to dislike it enough to go through the process.

Now that we are on the other side of the process we are thrilled, but I can certainly understand why many would not feel compelled to deal with it.

We like our painted textured driveway as well, but many prefer untreated. Totally understandable to me.
