I am not coffee drinker, though I do have a Mr.Coffee coffee maker somewhere in the pantry for that occasional time I make the drink, but my sister, who will be visiting for the winter, does like a cup or two every morning. She has a smaller Keurig and loves the coffee it makes.
Last year I bought another brand 1 cup maker and it isn't the best or easiest to use.

Suggestions on whether a smaller Keurig or even a Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker would be better. I'm partial to the Kerig, but recognize that some of them do develop problems.

I LOVE my Keurig. Just know that if you buy the latest version (2.0) that brews the carafe as well as the single cups, you may not be able to use all brands. I bought one for a friend and she tried to use a Maxwell House pod and you get an error that they are not compatible. Now I have to say that most brands are though. You can still buy the older versions and that's what I would do. IMHO.

We have had Keurig for about 6 years now. We drink only a cup or two a day. It is perfect for us. If you drink more than that price wise it would be better to get a regular coffee pot. We love the Keurig. You can buy so many different flavors. We have recently discovered Community Coffee on line and love their coffee. It fits in a Keurig. They are called k-cups. The coffee does run about .45 cents a cup up to about .55 cents per cup. Sometimes you can get it on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond for less. Forgot to mention you can buy at Bed Bath and Beyond a filter that you use instead of the k-cups. You can fill it with your own coffee.

We are on our 3rd Keurig in about 3-4 years, the previous 2 broke, one just out of warranty, and the other during warranty. The current model is crippled, it will no longer auto turn off (just out of warranty....). So when this one dies, will need to figure out what to do, I do not like the lack of reliability of this product, and this comes from a TEA drinker. I do not use it, my wife does.

Thank you both. I have read that the newer system doesn't work with the flter type pods you fill with your own coffee. It's most probably way too big a machine for our use. So many models, I just want to be able to brew a cup of coffee....

Any recommendations as to what model?

Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker. Currently priced at $38.11 on Amazon with free shipping. Walmart also sells this model, usually around 30 bucks.

Plus, it was recognized as one of the best products back in 2011 in that "leading consumer research magazine."

We've used the Cuisinart single brew system, you can buy filters to use your own coffee in it. We had our first one for 2 years and it developed problems, had receipt and box and took it back to Kohls and they no questions asked gave us a new one. If you get one buy it at Kohls they stand by what they sell with no time limits on how long you've had it. We use our's every day about 4- 6 cups a day we do buy K-cups when we want to splurge but the reusable cup (we got a Winn Dixie) works great with our Maxwell House coffee LOL

After having two last only a year or so I was not happy with the Keurig so changed to the Cuisinart which has lasted three years. Still uses the K cups!

I also meant to mention that you do have to do the vinegar clean out every so often, and you have to use a paper clip or something with a fine point to clean out the thing that pokes the k-cups, then run an empty cup through and you're good to go. Yes, buy it at Kohls or Bed, Bath and Beyond where you don't have return issues. I order my k-cups through Keurig but sometimes I use one of my 20% coupons on a pack of k-cups.

Cooks Illustrated really liked the Zevro IAB109 Incred 'a Brew-Direct Immersion Brewing System for Coffee. It makes about 16 ounces of coffee at a time. No paper filters to buy. Uses regular scoops of coffee from a bag/can. You heat the water separately and pour it in. It costs $20 on Amazon.

We have a small Cuisinart with a stainless pot. Uses cone filters and makes great coffee. Amazon, inexpensive, small footprint on your counter...probably less than half the size of a Keurig.

We love coffee. As a result, we have never been interested in the single cup options. We still buy whole bean coffee (primarily from Joffrey in Tampa), use a grinder (Braun), and a simple Melitta pot with (brown) paper filters.
