I was wondering since I work for a electric utility in Ohio, and Florida is the lighting capitol of the United States, How long are the lights usually out? Would a whole house generator somthing you wished you have. With all the lineman ready to retire, including me, should I be ready to hook one up when I move to TV?

all our utilities are underground and in my 3+ years can only remember a couple of short duration power outages, most not directly related to T-storms. I have not felt a need for a generator. Of course, we haven't had any major hurricane issues come through in the time I've been here.
Someone who has lived here longer might have different insight...

We have been here for seven years. Have never lost power for more than a few minutes. That was only a couple of times. Save your money for tee-times.

My brother lives outside but near The Villages. After our multiple storms in '04 and '05 he installed a whole-house generator. He claims that's why we haven't had any major storms since then! :-)
In my five years here, I think I've lost power maybe three times for a total time of maybe ten minutes. So, what's to worry about? SWR ![]()

However, this TEMPORARY frigid weather has me thinking about one for only one reason.
In the unlikely event there would be a power outage in sub freezing weather, to have a power source to run the various pumps on the swimming pool, jacuzzi, waterfall and solar circulation pumps. So zero in 5 years....what are the odds of one during a freeze??? Kinda like justifying buying a new car to get better gas mileage!! btk |

I had a whole-house generator while living in Upstate NY, but we had above-ground power lines that were prone to damage from ice-laden falling tree limbs and drunks hitting power poles. Power outages ran into hours...as many as 18. And we had water only when the well pump had electricity. Duh!
Here, however, with underground electric lines and no wells -- I have felt no need to get a generator...and it's been over three years. Outages are few and brief. |

Murphy's Law: you will lose power precisely when you need it most.
