I use a credit card at gas stations, but never at a restaurant. I don't like that the restaurant takes your card away and immediately charges the meal amount before you add the tip. Then, they later re-process the transaction adding in the tip. Why can't they do a single transaction and not take the card in the back room?

How do you keep a waiter from processing your card out of sight ? Typically it’s done away from tables.

I have my credit card set so that when I use it I get an immediate text or email indicating a transaction has been billed to my card, this way if I’m scammed at least I know it’s happened immediately and can take appropriate action. My Chase Southwest card at gas stations sends me a message immediately, in fact it’s sent so quickly that before I even have time to pull the receipt from the gas pump my message has arrived that I had a charge and at the location where it occurred.

Skimmers are a problem everywhere, we spend most of our time at our permanent home in the North East and just last evening one of the TV stations did a special on CC skimmers.

In the Northeast, at least, they are starting to use a device they are calling a "Ziosk" (probably the brand name). It is a table top credit card scanner that allows the customer to process their own bill. You can even include tips. Card never leaves your possession. I have seen them in Mass, Maine and Connecticut so far. I hope they gain nationwide use. It will reduce fraud in restaurants to almost nothing.

Chili's and, I think, Applebie's uses these in The Villages. They should be used everywhere.

For those who have never used a Ziosk, they even have a function to split the bill. I haven't tried that yet, but I'm told it works pretty well.

Maybe local gas station employees should include checking the pumps when they go outside on a smoke break or to empty the trash cans.

I always use a credit card to get gas...versus using a debit card.

There are laws limiting liability on credit and debit card fraud, but the time period to be protected...is much better with credit cards.

Federal Law

When it comes to protecting against card fraud, credit cards may have a slight edge when it comes to protecting yourself against losses.

Consumer protection laws ensure that if your credit or debit card is used for unauthorized charges after it is lost or stolen, your liability is capped at $50.

However, for debit cards, under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, you have to report the fraud within two business days from when you become aware of the incident to limit the maximum loss to $50. If you report it between three and 60 days after learning of the fraud incident, your maximum loss liability could be as high as $500.

And if you wait more than 60 calendar days after it’s been posted on a statement, prepare for the possibility of an uphill battle if you want to receive any reimbursement.

However, with credit cards, you can report the fraud at any time and retain your $50 liability cap.

Not sure if this is effective, I have scratched the CCV 3digit number off the back of my credit card . I believe the only time the CCV number is required is if you're placing a phone order or an online order. So this way I'm not afraid of the card going to the back room at restaurants.
