Default Large black wild cat spotted

SWMBO (my wife) was driving on Warm Springs towards Bigham Trail from Publix and saw a large black cat crossing from Marsh Bend area to the non-villages houses just east of Bigham Trail. First gators in the driveway and now panthers! Bigfoot can’t be far behind.

Florida Panther - Florida Panther - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Appearance – An adult Florida panther is unspotted and typically tan in overall coloration, but may be darker brown to rust-colored along the midline of the back. The underside is dull white or buff-colored. Whereas the tip of the tail, back of the ears, and sides of the muzzle are blackish, there has never been a melanistic (black) puma documented in North or South America.

Have you ever tried to take a picture of moving wildlife while driving?

Don’t know for sure what it was, she was driving at the time but it ran just in front of her and it wasn’t moving like a domestic cat does. Too big for that anyway.

I had a similar experience way up north (in the Spanish Springs area) several years ago, which I have pushed aside as an anomaly. I walked out my door about 10:00 PM with my Greyhound for our pre-bedtime walk. My dog, who NEVER barks, froze and then started barking. Diagonally across the street was a large black creature, much larger than anything we may see out and about from time to time: feral cats, the occasional coyote or two, an opossum. Whatever it was just stared at us. My eyes had not adjusted to the dark, and it was too far away for my flashlight to be of any use. Eventually it loped away, and we cautiously continued our walk. I had the eerie feeling it was watching/stalking us. I sensed it again farther along between two houses. Walking, not running quickly, we returned home. I concluded it was probably a bear.

Yes black panthers are common and are found in Florida.

Panthers are animals that are natively found on three of the world’s continents, with their location depending on whether or not it is a black Leopard or a Black Jaguar. There are 30 different subspecies of Leopard found across both Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and with the once large natural range of the Jaguar stretching throughout Central and South America and even into parts of the USA, the Panther has become an incredibly adaptable animal that is found in a variety of different habitats. Although they are most commonly found in tropical and deciduous forests, the Panther can also be found inhabiting both marsh and swampland, along with grasslands and even more hostile areas such as deserts and mountains. Along with a number of the world’s largest felines, the Panther is becoming rarer in the wild primarily due to habitat loss in the form of deforestation.
