Greetings,
Two very different questions: Is a 10,000 watt portable generator needed at all in TV. I am assuming the grid is very very reliable and it would be just taking up space in the garage ? Can you golf by yourself or does the tee time system put you with others ? Thanks in advance for your comments |

On the past four years the our power has been out for an extended time just once. I believe it was out for maybe three hours.
I am considering a small, quiet 2200W generator to run a refrigerator or two. Considering it but have not purchased yet.

You may get occasional short term outages, but you probably don't need a generator. I did have a 15-hour outage about 4-5 years ago.
You can show up to golf, but they will usually link you up with other golfers. |

Good morning!
We offer FREE estimates for installing a portable generator interlock system (either 30 or 50 amps) at your panel or meter main (whichever applies). The higher the amperage, of course, the more you will be able to run on the portable generator. We have also installed 22kw Whole Home Generac stand by units in the Villages, which will kick on automatically in case of an outage. Give us a call if we can help! (352) 748-6251 We are offering 5% off if you book with us after seeing us on Talk of the Villages - Casandra with Pike's Electric. |

Be sure if you go the portable route that you get an inverter generator. A conventional generator w/o an inverter (or so I've been told) will mess with anything in your home that is computer-controlled, and in this day and age that is about everything except the lights and portable fan. |

OP, the answer to your question highly depends on where you live in the villages. During hurricane Irma, some areas had no power for several days, mostly in the area served by Duke Power. We live just south of 466a (SECO Energy) and never even had the lights blink during that storm. We have been here since 2013, and may have had 10 interruptions, most were less than a few seconds, and a couple that were several minutes to an hour. I have very little info on the new section (Leesburg electric??) but I did see some complaints about outages.
I agree with the above comment about a small inverter generator (very quiet) or a regular generator (noisy) is the 2 to 3 kW range to keep food cold. Now a few words of caution, read the directions on where and how to use the generator, the carbon monoxide gas can kill you. Make sure you have an adequate and safe way to connect the equipment you want to be powered to the generator. While extension cords are convenient, they are hard to get in the house SAFELY, and a transfer switch may cost as much as the small generator. IMHO, they are not necessary in this area, unless you have medical equipment or other items that need power all the time.

If you have a generator.................bring it.
I had one up North, brought it down, have used it once. Otherwise, probably don't NEED it..............it's an insurance policy. Tee Time.............Yes you can play by yourself. If you spend $8/month and use the online tee time service, you can find empty tee times the night before. Otherwise, most of the time you will be grouped with someone. ![]()

I was able to find two flat extension cords, 50' long each, that are designed to go under doors. If push comes to shove I can run both of them from the generator located outside, under the garage door and under the door from the garage into the kitchen. One would handle the kitchen and the other stuff like lamps, modem, TV, etc. etc. They are 20 amps each though I believe they do come heavier than that. |

I guess if we are hit my a storm power could be out for awhile. You might want to run the fridge and AC. We have a portable unit up north that we might bring down at some point but for now it is more important to have it in the cold weather.
My wife and I have played golf later in the day at a beginners coarse and were able to play just the 2 of us. Once there was a single that played through. By 3-4 in the afternoon there are not many playing some of the courses. |

I'm not overly concerned about it because people who have been here a long time don't recall many long outages. However, I like to be prepared. So, I have an older Honda 2000, which runs great. I bought a portable AC/dehumidifier at Costco for a reasonable price. The Honda will run the AC, the refrigerator, some lights and a portable fan. Those Hondas are fairly quiet, and don't use much gas. We can keep one area of the house cool and the refer going. I keep 5 gallons of gas around and bought a PITTSBURGH MULTI-USE TRANSFER PUMP from Harbor Freight (small tubing with a little hand pump) to syphon gas from a vehicle if needed. So, in the unlikely chance that "the big one" hits we can last a few days comfortably on our own.
I have experience living in this type of climate following a hurricane with no AC. It ain't purdy. Modern houses here are not designed for natural ventilation and air flow. |

The installers just left. They installed a 18KW whole house Generac generator. Took them just under 5 hours, a real professional job. I probably will never need it, but just like a gun, you don't need it till you really need it.
