Default Beat The Heat

Does anyone know of a little cooler location to escape the heat for a week or two, other than a Cruise? Within a days drive.

Cool places to vacation in summer:

1) California Redwoods (Humboldt and Del Norte counties)
2) Lake Tahoe Ca/NV
3) Colorado Rocky Mt resorts (Aspen, Vail, Breckinridge)
4) San Diego - temperate weather
5) Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur
6) Yellowstone/Grand Tetons

Turn up your AC and stay inside during the hottest parts of the day. Don't have to pack. Don't have to drive/fly. No new bed to get used to. Go out early morning/after 7 PM. Use the AC at rec centers. Buy a $100 three month gym membership if you want to work out.

Far cheaper than traveling. And Easier

I'm headed up to NC in a couple weeks to go whitewater rafting with my son at Nantahala. I did this a year ago and just about froze my tush off! Up in the mountains, it was 54 degrees one morning! This year, so far the weather looks 70's daytime, lower 60's overnight. It makes me appreciate this heat, but I'm a wuss when it comes to cold.

I have heard that many Floridians spend the summer in North Carolina. There are many towns in higher elevations with lovely scenery. It's certainly a bunch of hours by car but if you are staying several weeks it might be worth it. The Highlands-Cashiers area is one such place.

OP wanted to know of places within a days drive. Agree on all of the above but one day will include air travel. One days drive would be the mountains of NC, Georgia Tennessee etc. They can be warm also

Since you set the criteria, "within a days drive", I would suggest mountains or beach. You could get to Helen, Ga, Waynesville, NC on a long day's drive. Asheville, NC , Smokey Mountains are also in that region. Beaches, choose your pleasure.

Back in the 1970s after an aunt and uncle moved to Winterhaven, FL I started spending time in Central Florida. During that time I got to know two long time Florida residents, a real estate broker and an orange grove owner. They both went north during the summer. One had a motor home, the other a second home in the mountains of North Carolina.

I dunno, perhaps this is a stupid question. But, if you’re looking to beat the heat, why live in Florida or anywhere in the South?

Sorry - over-looked the day’s drive part - I’ll try to do better 😀

blue ridge parkway has many scenic attractions and events along the trip. Nice towns to stay a night or two. Cherokee nc starts the trip, great town and grandfather mt , forrest gump ran the curve, is not to be missed with it's mile high swinging bridge
