Does anyone know of a little cooler location to escape the heat for a week or two, other than a Cruise? Within a days drive.

I'm headed up to NC in a couple weeks to go whitewater rafting with my son at Nantahala. I did this a year ago and just about froze my tush off! Up in the mountains, it was 54 degrees one morning! This year, so far the weather looks 70's daytime, lower 60's overnight. It makes me appreciate this heat, but I'm a wuss when it comes to cold.

I have heard that many Floridians spend the summer in North Carolina. There are many towns in higher elevations with lovely scenery. It's certainly a bunch of hours by car but if you are staying several weeks it might be worth it. The Highlands-Cashiers area is one such place.

OP wanted to know of places within a days drive. Agree on all of the above but one day will include air travel. One days drive would be the mountains of NC, Georgia Tennessee etc. They can be warm also

Since you set the criteria, "within a days drive", I would suggest mountains or beach. You could get to Helen, Ga, Waynesville, NC on a long day's drive. Asheville, NC , Smokey Mountains are also in that region. Beaches, choose your pleasure.

Back in the 1970s after an aunt and uncle moved to Winterhaven, FL I started spending time in Central Florida. During that time I got to know two long time Florida residents, a real estate broker and an orange grove owner. They both went north during the summer. One had a motor home, the other a second home in the mountains of North Carolina.

I dunno, perhaps this is a stupid question. But, if you’re looking to beat the heat, why live in Florida or anywhere in the South?
