Default Sumter County Sheriff?s Office warns public of phone scam

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain vigilant with the emergence of a new phone scam. The phone scam involves calls from someone — sometimes automated — claiming to be a deputy from the sheriff’s office. The scammer informs victims that to avoid arrest they must send money or gift cards.

Sounds like a pretty transparent scam to me. Of course, I never answer the phone to numbers I don't know, anyway, so scams don't even get in.

These crooks pretending to be LEOs from Sumter County have no imagination.

Remember getting a call from a relative in Buffalo (not really the location) who said he needed money for a lawyer. And the person said he was Bill who actually lived in Buffalo.

It was not his phone even though "Bill" said he was calling from a jail.

But "Bill" sounded nothing like the real Bill.

No. His real name was something else and he was somewhere else. They had his name and location right but got the voice wrong. This was about ten years ago.
