Great going, Florida. You set the stage for the other 49 States to join! Kudos to Republican Governor Rick Scott for having the correctness and guts to move forward on this critical issue !
Hooray for Florida! ! I-95 will be jammed for the next month or so........Druggies and deadbeats heading North out of Florida.. Florida is the first state - Hooray for Florida!!!! Florida is the first state requiring drug testing to receive welfare! In signing the new law, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said, "If Floridians want welfare, they better make sure they are drug-free. Applicants who test positive for illicit substances won't be eligible for the funds for a year, or until they undergo treatment. Those who fail a second time would be banned from receiving funds for three years! Naturally, a few people are crying this is unconstitutional. How is this unconstitutional ? It's completely legal that every other working people have to pass drug tests in order to get a J-O-B which supports those on welfare! Let's get Welfare back to the ones who NEED it, not those who WON'T get a JOB..... I AGREE 100% |

Good idea but watch crime, especially home invasions, strong arm robbery, crimes against persons, go up. If they don't get governemnt money, your money is just a good when it comes to buying drugs. If they test positive, jail time for using an illegal substance.

Gotta start somewhere, sometime. Surgical repair of a terminal problem is always messy. What is the alternative? Eventually some will wake up and take responsibility for themselves. Where is HOPE and CHANGE? I prefer to remain NAIVE TO THE EXTREME if it means being HOPEFUL and supportive of ways of fixing problems, instead of hiding my head in the sand and wringing my hands and crying everytime more of my money goes to those who can take care of themselves. These are people who have worth! How do we do them a service if not to help them change and discover their worth, reclaim their human dignity? This move by Gov. Scott is a courageous step in the right direction.

Another reason they'll head north is because of the stricter gun laws up there. Makes it easier to invade homes. |

Why would you NOT want welfare-seeking drug abusers identified, for the sake of their kids???
Why do you want to look the other way on kids who wake up every day looking at drug-addicted parents making that lifestyle look normal???? Many kids would be better off in an orphanage. But that idea has been vilified by pot-smoking old hippie burnout social workers and psychologists, and their superior wisdom. They'd rather have innocent kids shoved from foster home to foster home, like unwanted dogs. |

Change can be painful... If the folks up North need to defend themselves, they may have to change some of those laws that prevent them from doing so.

Like that is going to happen anytime soon. What really needs to happen is you don't work you don't eat. Even if working means, cleaning up highways, or some other community service, before you get your check. Then you might get some change in the way people think. No more free lunches.

I said TAKING AWAY THEIR MONEY WILL NOT WORK. Stop assuming what I mean. And I will fill in the blank for you....a woman has a right to choice. Yes, I believe in abortions. You don't. End of that discussion, once again. My solution would begin with making attendance in some kind of behavioral therapy program a condition of receiving welfare. You are NOT getting them directly to work...most lack the skills to get work. Once there is some handle on the roots of the addiction, THEN you can start trying to slowly introduce short term work goals. |

ladydoc~You painted the problem into a corner. You said it might work if they could get jobs, but then you put an end to that solution as laughable. Whether my comments could be interpreted as platitudes is subjective, as they were only insignigicant in your opinion and not based on any fact that I am aware of.
I therefore wrongly assumed that you had no viable resolution to the problem...my bad ![]() As far as being able or up to any kind of work, or the need for behavior therapy...The Pacific Garden Mission in the heart of Chicago has been serving these kinds of people since 1877. Their method is that they will give you a meal and a place to lay your head at night in exchange for your work. If that only means folding sheets, peeling potatoes, washing the dishes or toilet...than that is what it means. For over 130 years, the Mission has been incredibly successful with helping drug addicts, drunks, etc to turn their lives around. http://www.pgm.org/ My Mom-in-Law's cousin Elaine Hauge, was the director of the women and childrens division for 37 years. http://www.moody.edu/edu_MainPage.aspx?id=12068 Elaine has many stories that would curl your hair and bless your heart at the same time. From her I have learned that there is no time like the present to start to help others AND never give up HOPE that they can change!...I all seriousness, I am curious to know what your experience is with drug addicts, drunks, etc, since you seem to know alot about what they will or will not do and what they are or are not capable of. Are you a social worker or psychologist by trade? |
