Default Social Security question

A question for anyone who has been collecting Social Security for at least a year:

I received my first check from Social Security in February, so this is my first turn of a new year with the agency.

Some years ago, my father showed me a letter he received telling him what his monthly benefit would be for the coming year. I was sure he received that in October or November, but I am even more certain I did not really pay attention to the timing.

So, my question is, is that normally due later in December or did this go the way of those annual statements SS used to send to working folk a few months before their birthdays telling them about their future benefits? The last of those came out in '09.

Anyone with more than a year's experience with SS probably knows the answer. Share, please?

Default Social Security

I looked back at my mother's SS records, and she has not gotten a benefit increase for the past 3 years, hence no letter pertaining to the next year's benefit. A benefit increase was announced in October for 2012, 3.6 percent, so I would think that SS would send a letter informing beneficiaries of their 2012 benefit.

Just my opinion.

And here I sit waiting for my letter. I guess the savings from the mailings will go against the trillions of dollars we spent this year.

Default SS statement

We both received statements explaining our increase this week.
I recall while working the projected statements of my benefits.

I would call them to get specific answers to your questions, (800.772.1213). The only increase I know of is the COLA for 2012 that is 3.6% and I have not received a letter yet. I may be wrong but once you start collecting, that form of future benefits is not sent. I know I don't get one anymore. They want you to go to there web site www.ssa.gov if possible, or use the last one you received.

The annual income statement for tax purposes can be obtained on-line but for some reason, I found it easier to just call and have them send it.

I don't know what "letters" you guys are talking about. Mom & I (on SSDI) get those folded up postcard-like mailings for what the upcoming amount will be for the new year around the last part of December, I think, then we get them in the new year like W-2's.

Those folded up mailings are what we're talking about. I would think they should be arriving soon, based on the recent announcement of a benefit increase for 2012.

In fact, my wife's and my benefit announcement for 2012 arrived in today's mail, reflecting 3.6 percent increase.

Thought I would post this for those interested.

Thanks for posting this. I will be on the look-out for the statement.

I have always found SS to do, what they say they are going to do.
