Default Costa Cruise ship sinks.

The story says that the Captian has been taken into custody. How can a Cruise ship be some four miles off course after just two hours of sailing?

On a more serious note, this was terrible! I've cruised a few times and I'm not sure I want to go again! Seeing that ship on it's side knowing what those people must have gone through is scary. I don't see how this could have happened.

I've never been on a cruise, but saw the this ship on the evening news. Terrible situation. Some passengers interviewed said the situation was chaotic after the ship ran aground. According to ABC News Costa cruise line is owned by Carnival, and according to ABC News, Costa Cruise lines does not have the best safety record.

I still would love to go on a cruise someday, but I don't think it would be on Costa cruise lines.

We're taking a Norwegian cruise to the Eastern Caribbean out of Miami in February - All I know is that I will pay complete attention to the safety briefing and lifeboat drill. The photos of this ship are unbelievable. Hard to believe this could happen with the navigation tools available today.

Yes, but apparently this ship didn't even bother to have a lifeboat drill.

if you fear getting on a cruise ship because of a very isolated incident then I assume you most certainly would not entertain getting into your car, that is by far, day in and day out much more dangerous. And the old argument of at least you are in control is bull honkey....that is why they call them accidents.

And as Paul Harvey says there is definitely more to the story. If you have ever has the good fortune to be on a tour of the bridge of a cruise ship you very quickly learn about the degree of automation used. Unless there were multiple malfunctions, which could happen, there is no way to be off course by four miles. In ship navigation being off a small part of one degree would put a ship way off course over a very long journey. To be off four miles there would have been screen alerts or alarms or some attention getting.

The Captain does not have to be present on the bridge for a ship to be on course; he is accountable and responsible for assuring there are people and systems in effect to guarantee safe passage.

There is more to the story to come.
