Flying to Ireland in May. Going to Dublin and Limerick. Does anyone have any advice or tips regarding travel, getting around, what to pack, etc?

Pack an umbrella/rain coat.

Bed and Breakfasts beat hotels for meeting locals and learning customs etc. also much cheaper than hotels.

Places to see Dingle Isle. ring of fire; Blarney Castle (kiss the Blarney Stone) Tralee.

It's a long long way to tipperarey and not worth the drive.

Naw, ya won't be needin' the raingear a'tall.... I was there in May a few years ago for a full week and it only rained twice. Once for three days, once for four.

Get a copy of "McCarthy's Bar" by Peter McCarthy. A best seller in Ireland a few years ago and a great intro to Irish humor and Irish people, and one of the funniest books you'll ever read. A must read for anyone going to Ireland for the first time. If you don't get to read it until after you return, that's okay 'cause it's a must read for anyone who's been to Ireland.

If you're going to be driving a rental, get all the insurance you can....and know you'll never EVER complain about drivers in TV again....

Don't spend all your time hitting all the typical tourist sites. Go off the beaten path and know the actual Irish are probably now outnumbered....

Spent a few days in Ireland this past year and one thing that worked well and was enjoyable was taking a train from Dublin to Galway and returning by coach bus.

The scenery is amazing as you travel through the country and taking both the train and the bus give a view of different countrysides.

Suggest an overnight in Galway and if you are an Oyster lover you will love it, they have some of the best oysters I have ever eaten.

We visited for ten days last September. Rented a car and did B&B's which were wonderful, however in Dublin we did stay in a hotel. We did not have any rain and we dressed in layers since the afternoons were mild. I actually thought the driving was better/safer than here! Lovely, warm people. Really enjoyed Irish Coffee and great selection of beautiful wool sweaters and throws. Cliffs of Moher absolutely breathtaking.

Just remember, don't go to Ireland for the weather, it can change in a flash. A must is the Dingle Peninsula - Ballyferritier - all beautiful and along the coast. B&B's are great, there is one place in Dingle (I'll try to recall the name) that I'll PM you about. Doyles Seafood Restaurant is terrific there, too. And the pubs, a blast. Have fun!
