Gary Stein Case: Judge Won't Block Discharge Effort Against Marine Who Called Obama 'Enemy'

I can understand that soldiers on active duty should have their rights to free speech limited because of their jobs and national security but this seems to be going a little too far?

It does look like a stupid thing to do-- to post comments against your Commander-in-Chief (CIC) on Facebook which also include a statement that you will not follow his orders. Except how many low level soldiers actually get orders from the CIC?? I see that he is a Sergeant in the Marine Corps.

By calling President Obama "the Domestic Enemy", the Marine is basically guilty of treason. He is lucky the military has only decided to give him an undesirable discharge instead of charging him with treason. If the Marine is discharged, I am sure he will be on the FBI watch list, too, as a possible threat against Pres. Obama.

That is not just for Pres. Obama, but for any president. I was not wild about the Johnson (Lyndon - not Andrew!) administration policies when I was in the Army but did not speak out against them. Same way for the Bush administrations - a soldier did not have the "free speech" to call either Senior or Junior Bush a Domestic Enemy during the Iraq invasions and occupations.

People have to learn consequences of posting material on Facebook as it will affect future events to them be it in school, military, or a job.

Oh crap Buggyone, I have to agree with you again. What is this world coming to. Actually all orders come from the Commander in Chief, down thru the chain of command. Now lets be real, we all know that he does not actually, give every order, but following the chain of command, what ever military person does, comes from a chain of command that is topped by the Commander in Chief, IE., the current sitting President. What the Marine Corps is doing is correct, that young seargent disrespected the Commander in Chief and now must be held accountable for his actions.

I must also agree with you on this one. It's not often I get to do that. When you're in the military the rules are a bit different. You don't actually lose your free speech rights, but those rights don't necessarily apply when you're addressing your superiors.

P.S. I am very pleased to see you are posting serious thoughts again in between some of you more jocular postings. It makes things way more interesting.

Well I agree that the Sgt committed a military faux pas and subsequently penalties will follow.

The problem I am having with all of this is that the Sgt is spot on in his criticisms. This withdrawalist is the last guy I would follow anywhere.

Buggyone: Now come you know their was an active call for the capture of bin laden from 9/11. To credit Obama with bin laden's death is to credit Obama for being smart enough to drink water or to eat. By the way there was criticism thatby killing bin laden and not capturing him valuable intelligence was lost.Should Obama accept credit fore that too? Probably not? Credit does go to Navy Seals for their fine work. But saying Bush set in motion all the intel that lead to the killing of bin Laden is absurd. Bush was in office until 2009.
