Default Moving down with an older parent

We will be moving down in a month or so and MIL is coming with us. Was wondering how many other permanent Villagers are in the same situation. It would be nice to have a way to connect some of our parents to meet and share life stories. For example, my MIL was a nurse during her career, but what is more interesting is she was a nurse in WWII and was part of the team that liberated the concentration camp in Auschwitz.

I have been fascinated, and quite frankly in awe by some of the stories she has shared with me.

She is shape in mind, loves people and I thought it would be wonderful if we could help her meet someone her own age. Well, after all she is 91 and I'm just a spring chick of 70.

Anyway, would appreciate hearing from any of you who may be like us and caring for an aging parent.

Will your MIL be living with you or will she have her own home? My MIL is 89, lives across the street and a couple of houses down from us. Mom plays golf with the neighborhood ladies golf group, plays Bunco once a month with our ladies group, is the treasurer of our neighborhood social club, comes to the bowling alley during my team's season and cheers us on, plays mahjong every week and is thinking about pottery classes..... Around The Villages there is always something to do, no matter your age or your physical abilities or limitations. You'll find individuals of various ages in most groups around here, though age isn't really thought about, too much. Around here, everyone is 39...

Hurry home, we'll leave a light shining.

I agree with that. Would your mother-in-law want to share her experiences with a high school group or a church group? If not, I'm sure the Daily Sun would be interested in interviewing her.

I don't personally know anything about it, but, there is a club called four score and more for folks who are 80+

That might be worth investigating.

Good luck with your move.

I take my Mom to Four Score and More. The cost is $13 each time you go. It's held in the Savannah Center on Thursdays but not in June, July or August. They serve a very nice lunch, have a 50/50 raffle and have some sort of entertainment. You can call 750-0226 for more info.

Default Independent living

My Mom (90) lives in an independent living retirement community nearby. She has her own one bedroom apartment. The facility provides 3 meals a day (served by waitstaff) and provides linens, housecleaning as well as entertainment/games, etc. She loves it there and it is so close that I visit her everyday.

Oxford Senior Living | Steeplechase Retirement Residence in Oxford, FL 34484

The demand is so great for these facilities that they are building two additional independent living facilities close to this one. There are also plans for an additional building in 2014 for assisted living.

That sounds like a very nice arrangement and I know of that facility and it is a great place.

The only thing with that is your Mom is not eligible for a guest pass to come to Village pools, rec centers for meetings, or things like that with you.

My mom just moved to Summerhill Amelia villas, she's 83 (today is her birthday). She likes it because everything is so convenient.....short golf cart ride to the Publix, the bank, Walgreens or CVS, Walmart and a big choice of restaurants and fast food places, too. So far she hasn't had the nerve to drive to any of the rec centers, but I know she will, she is an excellent shuffleboard player!

I am glad to hear about the Four Score Plus club. It will be fun for her in Sept when they start up. Also Summerhill ladies meet for breakfast or lunch every month, and I know most of the villages have groups that do that.

Good luck

Yes, she lives with us now and will in TV, at least for as long as she can. Thanks for leaving the light shining!

It would light up her life to be featured. Thanks "Shooter" for the suggestion.

Thank you both for the "Four Score and More" information. Will definitely check into that when we are down for closing on Monday. YEA!

Thanks everyone for your post. We realize the age span of Villagers is wide and knowing there is room for our parents too is certainly heartwarming! Can't wait to get - HOME!

I think it was so thoughtful of you to bring her, for her and for us.

Apples don't fall too far from trees. I imagine she is the reason that one of you got all that charm and kindness first hand.

I have two good friends who are parents of good friends.

She will be loved and welcomed, just like you two.

Hurry home.

She never thought she would be living with us (neither did we for that matter), but she knows she is "home" with us and no longer says she isn't suppose to move with us.

Thanks for the kind words. We leave in the morning for our return "home" for the closing on Monday.

We have met people that are out and about doing things The Villages offers that are in their 50's 60's 70's 80's and 90's. There is for sure a place for anyone with the spirt of life regardless of age.
