I couldn't say it better than the article at this link:

This is pretty scary. We likely don't give a lot of thought to an island in the Indian Ocean, but what will that mean for coastal Florida not that many years away?...

Is global warming the cause? That can't be true, I know because Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) said so. He even wrote a book to back up his belief, 'The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future'

Who would you believe, 97% of the world's leading climatologists or Senator Inhofe?

Funny!

I remember there used to be a large contingent of TOTV posters rambling on about global warming being a hoax. Haven't seen them lately - think they must be in the political forum.

How about the Millstone Nuclear Power Station shutting down unit #2, because the cooling water (drawn from the ocean), is too warm to cool the unit ??

Default Maldives

The head of the tiny nation of Maldives (Indian Ocean) went to the UN recently to appeal for assistance for Global Warming. His entire country will disappear if the sea level rises by as little as 3 inches. This is not a hoax.

I don't know anyone who disputes the planet is warming. All it takes are readings from thermometers all over the planet. No dispute there. The problem I have with this article is that is measures ocean levels in one area of the world, not taking into account that India and Bangladesh are in a huge subduction zone. If the ocean were rising in this area at whatever the rate, it would be rising worldwide at the same rate and it is not. This article does not even mention erosion! The truth of the matter is some parts of the earth rise and some parts sink. A subduction zone sinks and moves under another part that is rising. This phenomenon is what is causing the Himalayas to grow inches/year. One indisputable fact is that when a tectonic plate moves under or over another plate the earth shakes, better know as an earthquake. This part of the world is very active in this regard. I am disheartened to see that the weather channel's website would post such an irresponsible article without taking into account all the facts. It's shameful.

I agree. Everyone jumps on anything to prove a point they believe. The climate of the earth is changing. Always has and always will. Right now it appears to be warming. But, the North Pole is melting while the South Pole is growing. Both at the same rate? Who knows. The island disappearing has nothing to do with the global climate change. The bigger question is "what is causing the warming and does man have an impact"

IMHO the jury is still out on that question. Termites generate 1268 times the amount of CO2 that man does. Man was not around in any great degree during the last great climate warming or the ice age. We can all agree the earth is warming, where we differ is why. That is where the focus should be, and get off the political debate.

Fossil fuels generate CO2, wind farms kill birds, Solar farms utilize way to much land, nuclear generates radio active waste. There is no good answer except turn off all the lights, heat, AC, and remove all the cars and trucks and golf carts. But then we would all starve to death. Probably the better answer is to use them all and do so with as little environment impact as possible for each. The world will get warmer either way. We need to understand why and how to adapt and survive, not how to prevent it. We can't.

I agree with most of your reply to my post, but I think you crossed a line when you wrote get rid of golf carts.

The thing is that to ask if global warming is real or not is attempting to simplify a somewhat complicated issue.
Some one said that 97% of all scientist believe in global warming. While I'm not sure that number is accurate let's assume that it is. Ninety seven percent of scientist believe that the earth is warming.
But many of them question whether this warming is some kind of catastrophic event or just a normally occurring cyclical event that happens every couple of centuries.
Some question whether it is a naturally occurring event or is caused by humans.
Many say that even if it is caused by humans that even if we do all of the things that environmentalist suggest that it wouldn't slow or stop it. It's too late and it's too far advanced.
On top of that is that there are many different ways of measuring and calculating the numbers that are often cited. There is disagreement between scientists on methodology.
Finally, many people are making billions of dollars from what has become the cottage industry of global warming. Al Gore's personal wealth has gone up 100 times since he became the face of the global warming movement.
I'm not saying that he's right or wrong or that he's lying or believes what he says. I am saying that when people are making that much money from everything it's not unreasonable to question their motives. Make no mistake about it, a lot of people stand to make a lot of money by exaggerating the effects of global warming.I'm not saying that this is the case with everyone, but I feel pretty sure that there are some scam artists out there taking advantage of the global warming issue.
One of the big problems that I see is that people get completely excoriated for simply questioning. That, to me is just wrong. We should all want to know the truth and if we can't openly question what is being stated then we will never get to the truth.

My high school science teacher told us about global warming in the early 70s and he was making $7,000.
If you want to make money I would still stick to oil stocks rather than global warming stocks.

Told ya I was on a roll...fast thinking!

What is REALLY interesting is recently I have read that we are in the beginning of the next ICE AGE! Look that one up! The next ice age... So which is it? Is the north pole and Greenland melting and the ICE AGE is delayed due to the "global warming"? Next we will be celebrating global warming as savior of the earth from the next freeze that would kill millions because we kept the earth warmer. Who benefits from that one? Maybe we will know in 10,000 years... Stay tuned! Too funny!

Yes, the climate of the world has gotten warmer, and then again colder....ice caps melted and then reformed, all before man even appeared on the scene. What is different this time is the incredible rate of change and what is driving the change.

The Koch brothers hired a very well regarded climatologist by the name of Richard Muller of UC Berkley to confirm their position that burning fossil fuels has nothing to do with global warming. Mr. Muller was chosen because of his reputation and because he too was very skeptical of the notion that global warming was connected to the use of fossil fuel.

After an exhaustive review, he was convinced his previous opinion was wrong and that global warming was caused ENTIRELY by human activity.
Funds for this study were provided for by the Folger Fund, the Bowes Foundation, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Bill Gate's Fund for Innovative Climate and Energy Research , the Koch Foundation, and the Getty Foundation.

I do not know if the Koch brothers asked for their money back.
