Default surviving sandy

this is truly my worst storm experience in all of my almost 65 years since birth! i have NEVER seen the devastation and loss of property in all of my born days! it must rank up with what people survived after katrina and in the hurricane that hit homestead fla!

since monday when sandy hit us there has been no electric, therefore, no heat. the good news is that we cook with gas and we had c and d cell batteries and candles on hand...and the local oem has been distributing ice and water [today's giveaways included meals ready to eat compliments of fema, too!]. we are warming the house with pots of simmering water on all 4 stove burners...so we have been somewhat warm and well fed! we can only thank god that we have a house in which to be so...so many others don't! the worst damage to our house is the loss of one window on the northeast side of our second story and some fence that blew down and now can be used for firewood!

the house is lighted at night with candles three camping lanterns and our solar path lights. i must say that the battery operated candles in the bathrooms do cast a lovely glow! what is the worst condition we face in our quest for survival...the cold toilet seat!!! and after 5 days of this survival the local shelter is beginning to look like a good place for a respite experience!

local power company cannot say where we fall on the priority list for service restoration, but the main arteries of state roads are mostly up and running and local towns that draw from those roadways are now quickly being restored. good for them - but i live near the beach and not a state or county roadway, oh well! we also did not have cell service until today because 25% of the cell towers had been knocked out by the storm as it swept thru the northeast...and because we subscribe to att and t-mobile instead of verizon! guess who is gonna switch providers!!!

hub's firehouse got power back today so maybe we will go and picnic there on sunday so that we can watch the giants beat the steelers - they're gonna do it for jersey, of course!

so that's the short of how we are surviving on the not so bad central jersey shore. i did get a report from the really devastated part of the shore that the oceanfront house that my mother sold a couple of years ago was relocated some feet west of where it had sat since the storm of 1962 - BUT -the front of the house was no longer in the area and the deck that had been in front was sitting in what had been the living room. i hope the new owners had flood insurance!

well, gotta go for now. need to check in with the outside world since we just got our generator up and running and this is the first opportunity i have had to do so! ciao for now!

(((HUGS))) I thank God you are okay. I'm so sorry to hear you are without electric. I'm happy everything else is okay though. Stay warm and dry, friend. When you make it back to Florida, we have to meet up. Gooo Giants! Your friend, BK Cunningham

I feel your pain. We have spoken before and you live near my sister who got her power back today. I hope yours is turned back on soon and life can return to some semblance of normal while the clean up takes place. It's an awful thing for my dear Jersey shore to have to endure and I wish all of my friends and family living through it the strength for each day. Sending hugs for each of those long days. So very sorry for all of this mess you are going through.

Happy to hear your doing okay. Hope they get your electricity back on before the nor'easter shows up. Bad enough having a cold spell, but those nor'easter can sure carry a wallup and that's something ya'll don't need. Take care and God bless.

Glad you are safe and sound.........and "making do" and improvising.
Love the solar lights idea.

You and yours have been in my thoughts and prayers all week.

So many of our family and friends in New Jersey and New York have been impacted one way or another.........

My husband got all of the New York Sunday newspapers yesterday and the pictures speak a million words..........of utter devastation.

Stay warm........another coastal storm is coming.......

I was in TV when storm hit while wifey was on LI. Instead of staying in sunny Florida, I flew back to a house with no electric or heat. Wife was scared. Power came on last night. I had no idea how destructive the storm was while in Florida because I didn't activate the television for a three week stay. And we all know how informative the HAPPY PAPER is. Devastation everywhere, but fortunate for me, aside from no heat and electric for seven days, all I lost was a section of vinyl fencing which I can snap together. NOW , Long Islanders are bracing fit the Nor Easter scheduled to arrive on Wednesday. Here we go again.
