Last week there was a representative at the Waterfront hotel buying coins, jewelry, gold, silver, watches, etc.

Anybody go there? What was your experience?

Is there anyplace in the areas close by TV that buy antique gold and silver?

You might want to talk to the jeweler in Wedgwood Lane, down from Publix. My husband spoke to him about some of mine and he was offering market price, but I decided to just keep it and give it to the grand kids. We have done business there and he seems to be decent to deal with.

I have sold and had items appraised at Coast to Coast Jewelers in Southern Trace near Publix. I think they are very fair and honest in their dealings. No charge for an appraisial unless you need documentation for insurance.
Others have told me that Bob's in Spruce Creek plaza also buys gold.
I just don't get a warm feeling about those traveling buyers that are here today and gone tomorrow.

My husband went there on Saturday. Unless you know what your stuff is worth you will get taken big time! He had a 14k gold watch to sell and knew it's value. The buyer at the hotel offered him 125.00 and my husband knew it was worth 300.00. So my husband told him we got other offers and one of them was 225.00. The buyer asked why we didn't take 225?? My husband says because I need 250.00 for it and the buyer said I'll give you 250.00. So, if we had no idea what our watch was worth we would have settled for 125. That's half of what we should have gotten for it. Do your homework!

I had a man's diamond ring to sell earlier this year so I went to Arden's Jewelry in LSL, Coast to Coast on 466, and to an independent appraiser in Mt Dora who does work for a California diamond exchange. All three explained the importance of the various factors used in establishing a fair market value and were pretty consistent in what they said but the offers ranged from $5000 to $7500. Then I went to The International Diamond Exchange traveling appraisers at the Hamton Inn and their first offer was $8500 and we settled at $9000 which was the best I could expect after getting a GIA report which eliminated any subjective opinions on carat wgt, etc. So my experience tells me that local guys place a high value on their convenience factor. I'm not so sure all the traveling road shows are any worse than our home town businessmen. If I do it again, I'll be patient and get offers from the outside folks as well as our locals. I believe I received a very fair price from the IDE folks, but not so much from the locals.

Not if they are a reputable master jeweler. Up here all of the jewelry stores are now doing the CASH FOR GOLD and PLATINUM..........

People, in need of funds, have cashed in their entire great grandmothers' silver sets, not to mention their own gold jewelry.......for the cash.

It's the "fly by nights" who travel from city to city....who might be suspect as far as giving a person a fair price.

People should go to their local trusted jewelry store for a fair deal.
Obviously, they will only get the price of scrap gold, etc. as it will all be melted down at the refinery..........or in the jeweler's workshop, to make new jewelry. There is also a "glut" of diamonds out there now....which were taken out of all this GOLD....and PLATINUM.

When the gold prices went SKY HIGH........no one could afford to buy new.
It's the old addage.........."you can't take it with you".......so might as well get some cash..........

Cash is King in today's economy.

It sounds like you were selling it to jewelers who recognized the value and fair market value.....and would be "re selling it" for a higher profit...................not melting it down for scrap.

That is a very high price you got.

Most jewelry is NOT as valuable as most folks believe it to be.
