Default Security

Morning All - just a question.

I'll be moving to TV in a few weeks and have always had security systems installed in my previous homes. I hear that few people have them in TV and just trying to get a feel whether I should put one in or not. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks and have a good one - Diane

I think you have to do what is comfortable for you. I watched a home for several years that did not have an alarm with no issues whatsoever. Once they were able to move down here, one of the first things they did was have an alarm system installed. They're more comfortable that way. I know people here who never lock their doors; some who make you feel like you're in an armed fortress. It really is a personal choice based on what makes you happy.

Thanks for the response. I'm thinking I more than likely will put one in because I'm used to having it. Just don't know if it's really a necessity.

If you are used to it you probably should continue

I think it's like the lightning rod issue; whatever gives you peace of mind at a reasonable cost. I wish I could say that the chances for a home invasion/robbery in TV carries the same odds as being struck by lightning, but in reality there are very few robberies here I think.

I have lightning rods on my house but they were there when I bought the house. If they hadn't been there, I would not have bought them - however, I do feel somewhat safer with them.

As for a home security system, it is up to each person's comfort level. I feel that having a home struck by lightning in The Villages is greater than a "home invasion" but there is a slight possibility of burglarly when you are gone from your home for a weekend or a longer trip.

I do remember on poster on TOTV who stated he feels so unsafe in his home in The Villages that he always answers his front door with a drawn pistol. Takes all kinds, doesn't it?

Thanks for the input folks. I'm tending to think I'll be putting in a system just because I'm used to it. I do think though that the "drawn pistol" when answering the door is a tad extreme - LOL.

Diane, I did not put a security system in my house but I do have two very lively Schnauzers who let me know when anyone is coming near the house even before they ring the doorbell, LOL. But what I did do, to make me feel safer, is I put a lot of motion lights around my house, two are in the lanai and one is at the back end of the house facing the backyard. If someone approaches, the lights go on and either scare them away, or the dogs let me know something's happening. I've never, thank God, had a problem so far. However, if it is something that you feel you need, by all means do it. I have never had one in any big city house that I lived in and didn't feel I needed it here.

Kathie - I see you hail from the Bronx. I'm originally from Queens and then Long Island. Small world. I too have two dogs - a shih tzu and a cocker spaniel/poodle puppy. I like the idea of the motion lights. That's something I think I will definitely do. The security system is a high likelihood too I think since I'm used to it. Not sure yet though - too many things on my plate to deal with right now including packing and movers and closings, etc., etc., etc.

We're going to put one in because we've always had one.
I want one for when we travel to have peace of mind.

Hey Pat - I'm Long Island too and going to Gilchrist. I'm pretty sure I'll have it installed shortly after moving in.

We have always had asecurity system in our homes up north. We opted not to have one installed and don't miss it in the slightest manner. Love not having to punch in a code each time we enter plus worrying about malfunctions or service contracts. As every said only you know your own comfort level :-)
