My wife and I own a house in The Villages. We are not full time residents, but would like to buy a car to leave at our house in Sept. Can we get a Fl licence plate for the car? Or do we have to have florida drivers licenses before we can do this.If we buy the car in Fl in order to get Indiana plates the State Police have to do a search on the title. We do not want to drive the car back to Indiana, then back to Fl.Can anyone help with what we can do.

I believe the person registering the car in FL must have a FL driver's license.
That's really the only logical way to do it.

While I am not familiar with all state's rules, in most states you can buy a NEW car in one state and register it in your residence state without much of a problem. The selling dealer collects the sales tax for your state and sends the paperwork to the proper state, or in some instances can give the paperwork (bill of sale and Mfgr's title) to you and you can take in the paperwork and pay your sales tax when you register. This type of transaction is common with companies that have employee driven cars in different states. Your insurance company should be able to include the car under your home state policy noting that it is garaged in FL. You can call your MV dept and ins agent to easily varify the ability for a multi-state purchase.

We have a car that we leave in our home in TV. We still have NY licenses but the car is registered, insured and licensed in Florida. With your insurance card and your car just go to the Tax Receivers office on 466 and Morse in TV. Go in the back door and one of the lovely ladies on the left will help you register your car.

I just got my car registered in fl 5 months ago , in order to get fl plates I had to have a fl drivers license ,and show that I had insurance . When I did that they took my ny license .

I suggest that you call the Auto Registration office for Sumter County and their phone number is 352-689-4645. Even if you don't have a home in Sumter County they can still give you the correct information.

Also since you own a home in The Villages I would call the people that you have your home owners insurance with and ask them about insuring the car which will go along with the registration laws of the state of Florida. Then you might check with your insurance agent in Indiana for the same information.

Florida plates are less money than Indiana or what I remember Indiana plates were before I moved here in 2006.

Also if you do Indiana plates I think you can have Florida police do the title search and then they will fill out a form that you get at the Indiana BMV. You might check on this. The police check is a stolen car check.

I spent 35 years in auto sales and these things change often and are different in every state.

It will be many times cheaper to get an Indiana plate for your new car. The Dealer can take care of it at time of purchase. You will need to get your insurance company in Indiana to insure your car driven here in Florida.

Just registered my car (currently in Wisconsin) found forms at the Sumter County Tax Commisioner site - took car to local community police dept to have VIN verified for the form and. Current title. - Spoke with with Ruthie at Powell tax office who had me fax forms to her for review. She shared all was good - I sent forms, current title and a check per weight of vehicle to tax office at Powell rd - 1 week later I had a license plate for it. Good luck

One of the forms I needed was a binder from my insurance company showing it would be insured in Florida.

You must have Fl insurance but not a Fl drivers license. Allstate will suspend all coverages's not required by law while your vehicle is in storage and not being driven.

To add to what GatorFan stated: We always keep comprehensive coverage on stored vehicles in effect. That way the car would be covered in case something should happen to it.

great thread for misinformation -- if i was going to get a car and register it in fl - the last place i would go to find out how to do this would be totv --- go to the dmv -- i often wonder why some people fell obligated to answer a question if you are not sure of the answer -

To answer your question, you don't need a Fl drivers license to register a car in Fl.

No, you do not have to have a Florida Driver's License to register a car in Florida. We are part-timers in TV. When we purchased our house in TV I moved a car down from NY. I drove it on the NY plates and insurance until the registration expired. In order to renew your registration in NY the safety inspection must be current - - I was not about to bring the car back to NY just for the required annual inspection.

I insured, registered and titled it FL. Registering in FL for the first time is rather expensive - over $300 but subsequent renewals are much more reasonable. Bottom line is you do not have to have a Florida Drivers License to register or title a car in Florida.
