We just moved in and to date the installer has been maintaining our spa. Starting in a couple of weeks it will cost $14.95/week for them to continue, which seems steep. What do people generally do?

If it is just a spa, I take care of my own. It's not a big deal to go out once and a while, dip the little test strip in the water and add any chems if needed. If nobody is using it, it shouldn't need hardly any maintenance. I think, IMHO, those folks are taking advantage of you. Do it yourself, it is very easy.

How handy are you? How often do you use the spa? How much time do you want to spend keeping all the chemicals etc in correct proportions?
One thought is to take a sample of the water to T&D pools retail store and have them test the sample.They will do this and advise what chems you need to add..

I have T&D maintaining my spa. It came with the house and they were the contractor for it. I have no clue how to adjust the chemicals and I felt that $15 a week approx is pretty fair considering I would have to buy chems, brushes, etc. The only thing I don't like is they insist on coming every week, there is no program for every other week and I hardly use the spa at all. But their policy is to maintain the spa every week no matter how often you use it.

Don't look at $15 a week, it's $780 a year.

That is high thought that what a pool costs?

Anyway, another option is drain it and just refill it when needed.

Another is add 6% bleach (chlorine) about 1/2 oz, per day.

I bring a water sample to T & D for testing and they run a test ant tell me exactly what needs to be adjusted and what amount of chemicals to be put into the spa. Very simple. I use test strips 2x per week just to keep tabs on the water quality and adjust accordingly.

I just buy a 1 lb jar of 1" chlorine tablets and throw one in about once a week. Very inexpensive and the jar lasts almost a year. Water is fine, doesn't smell or irritate. $15/week is a lot of money for spa maintenance. I figure $6 of that fee if for the labor, $2.50 for the gas to get to your place, $6 profit and $.50 for the chemicals.

It appears that it is either DIY or T&D at 15/week. We have maintained our spas in the past and will continue in TV!
