Default FIFA makes another questionable ruling

FIFA has suspended England defender Jarell Quansah for two matches after he was sent off with a straight red card against Mexico in the Round of 16.

ESPN FC on X: "Breaking: FIFA has suspended England defender Jarell Quansah for two matches after he was sent off with a straight red card against Mexico in the Round of 16. https://t.co/OAzQi3ahCB" / X

So who is FIFA favoring now? Norway or Argentina?

Does FIFA want to give Norway a slight advantage to show case the new Norwegian soccer star?

I’m rooting for Norway. I got a big kick out of watching the Norway fans having a blast doing the Norwegian Viking Row while cheering on fellow Norwegian Viktor Hovland winning at the Travelers Championship golf tournament. It appeared that the Norwegian Vikings know how to live it up just as much as the Scottish Tartan Army.

There are very bad smells coming from FIFA office, except when dealing with North and South American teams.

Why doesn't the PM of England have FIFA take another look. LOL. What a joke of a sport.

I looked at the foul several times and from several perspectives. I agree that initially it looked like a illegal cleats-up tackle of the ball which is a no-no and red card worthy. On closer examination it looks like Jarell's foot rolled up on the ball and was very unintentional as a result - unworthy of a red card.

As a trained ref, unintentional doesn't matter.
The fact that he came in with cleats first, that should be an automatic red card, regardless of unintentional, as the player needs to keep his body under control at all times.

I agree with the call, but adding a second game suspension, which is very unusual, is the point on the post. Just like the NFL uses refs to slant a game towards their desired sports entertainment agenda, FIFA appears to be doing the same.

Heh. Sorta clashes with the stereotype.

Years back I gave my lady companion of the time, a dyed-in-the-wool herringchoker, a book for her birthday: "Norwegian Humor. And Other Myths". She didn't seem amused. Which sort of proved the point of the book.

FIFA is giving corruption a bad name.

Not new incidentally. Allegations, many proven, go back years if not decades. Check out "The 5 Biggest FIFA Scandals of All Time" (The Sports Brief, July 6, 2026) for a good article on the topic, but there are many others as well.

Never much liked soccer, at any level, at least that part governed by FIFA. Always felt it was too close to professional wrestling in effect, than to a clean competition, given the shenanigans of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association.
