Default August: Osage County

I feel the need to do a PSA, sorry. I found this very interesting but cannot say I loved the movie. The more I thought about it and after seeing it for the second time I can say I like it. If you are just thinking of going to see this because you are fans of Meryl or Julia please do a little research first. I am not going to spoil anything in this post; but this is a very dark comedy. This is based on the Tony winning play and won a Pulitizer prize. I think they must have had a blast filming this but as with most adaptations of straight plays something always seems (to me at least) a bit off...almost like they are playing to the back of the theater. There is a lot of swearing not Wolf of Wall street level but more than American Hustle. Meryl and Julia go at it several times. If you see it I would love to know your thoughts.

I saw August Osage County on Broadway a few years ago and it stunned mel. I thought about it for weeks. Cannot call it a comedy. if it is, it'a very black one. I'm hoping to enjoy the movie

We definitely plan to see Osage County this weekend. I love Brownwood Theatre, I hope it's playing there.

I just looked up the story line and I was WAY wrong about what I had thought.

I saw the play in St. Petersburg. It's definitely not for light viewing. I may see the movie to see how it's done in a different genre.

We saw Osage today. Great performances by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. It has some funny moments, but it's a dark movie about a very dysfunctional family. I enjoyed it, but I think some people would find it disturbing.

I agree with Bare. Saw it today and thought it was a very interesting psychological study, very thought provoking. There are a lot of dysfunctional families, but I doubt if any are as articulate as the Westons. Julia Roberts was the sanest of the lot of females of the family and she was a mess (Chris Cooper was sanest of all). It reminded me a bit of the psychological dysfunction of Burton and Liz in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe". FWIW my wife and the other couple we saw it with hated it.

I also hated it.
I was drawn b/c of the big name actresses, but movie was too noir and no real ending, or a conclusive ending to the story. ( maybe imitating real life, but too real for me, for the movies)
Do not go to see this if you are depressed, my 2 cents.
Undisputably, though, Streep and Roberts were stellar. Great acting, not so great story line.

I guess I'm stupid, but what do you mean by "do a PSA"?

I was at the Old Mill Playhouse while this was getting out a few days ago. Heard other comments from some people who seemed to have hated it. It is probably one of those that I while wait for the DVD. The trailer I saw for it made it look like it was about a very dysfunctional family that had members say things to each other which were present mainly for shock value to the audience.

Most people would probably love it or hate it - very little in-between. From what I have gathered about your way of thinking Over the years I would suspect you would be on the love it side Tal.

We are such a help to each other on this forum. I didn't know either what PSA meant.

I thought he was going to have to test his testosterone levels.

I do like plays and movies like the one that seems to be described on this thread. Something that has some edge to it.
