Default Driving in Ireland

We are planning a family trip to Ireland , includes two children ages 12 & 8. My question is : How is the public transportation? If not good can you get a driver?

We are hesitant to drive to the small towns in Southern Ireland

We've been twice in last few years. Drive...it's not that difficult to learn driving on the "wrong" side First few times be sure to follow others, helps to remind you were to stay in lane. Lots to see in small towns and historic sites which are best accessed via personal auto. Go for it.

I would also rent a car, so much more to see. We received a great tip from a lady on the plane with us. "Left is right, right is wrong". My husband would say that out loud every time he got into the car.
