Default Travel to Russia and Geopolitical Risk

The EU is apparently passing some travel restrictions for certain people as part of their sanctions.

Depending on what happens in the Ukraine, some people's travel plans might end up disrupted.

If I had plans to go there I would be considering the possible implications of geopolitical risk.

I personally would not make plans for a trip to Russia at this time. If the Ukraine issue blows up, I would fear becoming a target of anti-American hot heads in country.

The Russian News Channel RT (Russia Today) is an eye opener.

RT hired some western journalist. I read where a journalist quit recently because of pressure on how to report the news about the Ukraine.

If you read some articles on RT about the Ukraine, the POV is is quite different (compared to say, CNN)... it is interesting.

There are comments from posters about Ukraine Articles.

Some of the comments are a bit chilling.

On one hand, it just looks like people spewing about America.... that is, from my computer screen.

But what might it mean if I were over there?

When it comes to risk, I just avoid it, if possible.

I had another link up from a Russian news source... but decided to remove it.

If you want to look for those sources you can find them doing searches.

Default You are wise to be concerned and curtail travel

Russian TV beats war drum on home front.

Very interesting article in order to further understand the present climate.

Does one believe the spin doctors? Or figure it out for themselves.

I hope our journalists on the ground in Ukraine "stay safe".

You are wise to be concerned about travel at the moment.

My own maternal grandparents emigrated from western Ukraine in 1906/1907. Grandma Katie (Kateryna) always proclaimed, "We are NOT Russian; we are Ukies, Rusyns, White Russians, Ruthenians.......but NOT Russian" although their cyrillic alphabet was the same.

She spoke Ukrainian and Polish, yet understood Lithuanian and Hungarian. The country she was born into was ruled by Franz Josef / Austrian Hungarian Empire. Hers was one of the little "tribes" in the Carpathian Mountains, as explained to me by a wise professor in Washington, D.C. who was a Ukrainian/Russian historian..

Humble, simple folks.....but they KNEW they were not Russian. Thus, I'm following this happening with great interest.

I also learned a lot about present day Ukraine as well as the "old" from InfoUkies, a great Canadian website who helps people with their genealogy. Just love their "Does your baba come from Austria?" So many border changes, many people didn't know where their folks really came from...........right now, some Ukrainian records are in Poland while some Polish records are in Ukraine..........and so on and so forth. They also learned the language of the ruling party at the time. Another interesting topic is communes and how people learn to speak the party line........whether it is right or wrong. They are indoctrinated in that fashion.

Ethnic Ukrainians that I've known are fiercely proud people; I can only imagine their national pride when they finally had their own country, free of Russia and other former rulers.......at last. Now this....

By the way, I do "get" the eastern Ukrainians, who speak Russian, etc. and show their allegiance to Russia........however, in my humble opinion, this is all orchestrated by Russia. Now, we, the west are to blame. Needless lives lost. Very sad. I wish my grandmother or mom was still alive so that I could speak to them about it. Ditto for my Ukrainian grandfather whom I never knew, having died an untimely death of the Spanish flu when my mom was 7 years old. Wish I could bring them all back.
