They actually told everyone they did it because their customers wanted better stuff.
Believe that and have a very nice bridge for sale/.

Where did you read that?

The articles I read stated they could no longer sell their items for $1 and remain profitable...

You’re both correct. With inflation, the value of goods drops resulting in having to buy cheaper goods they would be able to sell for $1. If you want the better quality products, the stores have to spend more, passing along that increase to the buyer.

According to Forbes “ Dollar Tree’s DLTR namesake value promise that’s held true for decades will now be only mostly true, as the company is set to raise prices as much as $0.50 on some products. The discount chain had been testing pricier products in its “Dollar Tree Plus” collection in an effort to increase sales, but this new price increase will affect items throughout the store. Minority communities across the country may be shelling out more money as they battle raising prices from stores which typically cater to low-end consumers, especially when the majority of its products are made in other countries.”

Dollar Store has not been a $1 store for years.

I went in to buy some plastic cups a few weeks ago and there were only half as many in the package but still price $1.00 so they pretty much doubled their selling price on plastic cups but kept them at a dollar a pack.

I believe OP is referring to Dollar Tree which has always been $1 max for everything. The upscale "Family Dollar" hasn't been. For 2 years ago "best used by" dated toothpaste Dollar Tree is the best.

Dollar Tree stores and Family Dollar merge several months ago. Family Dollar sells many items for more than a dollar. Until recently Dollar Tree never sold anything for more than a dollar but that has changed. A sign of the times…

I haven't been to the Dollar Tree since this change was announced so now I'm dreading it. It's all lies, anyway, the part about raising prices because customers want better quality stuff. They are just jumping on the inflation bandwagon.

They get most of their junk from China and I reckon they are having a hard time getting the volume they used to because of "supply chain" problems which can have many meanings. Thus, sales are down because available merchandise is not as plentiful. I went in a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how little Halloween stuff they had compared to previous years.

I went today(yep, guess I'm from the ghetto as mentioned above) and prices are still $1.00. I usually go there for pet toys for our dog and she usually tears them up pretty fast. So, it's worth a buck to keep her and Momma happy...

I read in The NY Times last week that because most of what they sell comes from China, and shipping prices from China are way up because so little is being shipped back to China because of Covid and tariffs that there is a glut of containers in ports in much of the western world and a shortage in China, their shipping charges went up $200 million in the past year. That eats up a large amount of their profit and depresses their stock value.

When you only read the headlines you only get part of the story. Dollar tree will now convert many of the stores to Dollar tree Plus. This means they will have items for a dollar still but they will also offer items for $1.25. 1.50 a dollar seventy five and two dollars . They own Dollar general which has never been only a dollar which has been the items for two / three / five dollars and up. You guys must be still in the 1950s when we had a five and dimes. Of course everything is going up. By the way the average about 300% markup or more on many dry goods items , less on many food items . I know as I was an importer for 45 years I know the price is very well of many items. Overall. We are extremely lucky to have Dollar tree and that they are profitable as they serve many under served communities with food and retail goods where there's not of Walmart available . And they are a lot closer for those of us that need to bicycle or walk in many communities. Your social security check went up you should be able to afford the extra quarter for that ice cream
