Just be sure plants are covered, especially new palms and "Southern" trees (you shouldn't have to worry about a new oak, though).

Our nursery tells me that with a prolonged temperature as low as 25 degrees -- a "long, hard freeze" -- even covering plants won't have much of an effect. If a heat source can be introduced under the cover, a light bulb maybe, they say there's a chance. But otherwise, what's going to happen is going to happen.

that last only a couple of hours. Mid 20' for a prolonged period is going to freeze the plant covered or not.

VK is correct, if feasible/practical get heat to the area. Spot lights can help move the temp a few degrees....don't let it touch the plants.

I am thinking seriously about finding a small apartment in the tropical zone to be able to go there in the month of January,,,,,but then would I be labeled a J-bird????

Besieds covering the plants, you need to spray fruit trees and the lawn with water so it'll freeze and form a protective covering. Just put the sprinkler on the 15 minutes before you go to bed.

I was advised by my lawn service to avoid watering before a hard freeze.

you do want to water 15 minutes per zone before going to bed and then 15 minutes per zone in the morning once the temperature goes above freezing. The water will provide a blanket on the grass and plants and maintain a temp of 32 degrees which should protect from the hard freeze expected. Whatever you do in the morning do not and I repeat do not walk or drive on the grass until the frost is gone. This will leave brown marks in your yard. Do not let your lawn service mow the next two days either. You want longer blades of grass in this temperature.
