I spend a lot of time lurking on the various home selling sites, inside and outside TV, and I like to use the site Gracie was kind enough to post where the Sumter Country Assessor provides pricing history on homes in Sumter County. There have been several houses in Sumter Country that I would like to look up, but their strange addresses won't compute on the assessor's website. Does anyone have a clue how I could get information back on addresses like this: 7851 SE 178 HARLESTON STEET or 17088 SE 76TH CALEDONIA TERRACE? I've tried every combination of the address, but the system just doesn't recognize any of them. Any suggestions? And does anyone know why these strange addresses occur? They look like hybrids/combinations of numbered and lettered street names. I know I could call the assessor's office, but thought I would try here first.

The addresses you are looking up sound like they are in Marion County.

Both of the addresses are in Marion Co. and in the Northwest corner of TV. You can look up property info for Marion Co. at http://www.pa.marion.fl.us/.
As for why the streets are named the way they are? Who knows! Mayby the person who did it was under the influence when it happened! ![]()

Why Marion County addresses are the way they are:
It is my understanding that, when TV was building in Marion County, the county insisted on the 1234 SW 123d St style of address. But, TV insisted that streets have a "proper" name. Thus, the 1234 SW 123d Willowbrook Ave style of address! Neither Lake nor Sumter County imposed such restrictions! That said, be aware that Sumter County addresses outside The Villages proper may be of the 1234 SW 123d St style! It helps to keep such trivia in mind when searching for some one in TV! SWR ![]()

No wonder I couldn't find them in the Sumter County database! I never thought of looking them up in Mapquest. Thanks for the responses - TOTV to the rescue again! I never would have guessed what was behind the street naming.

I posted this back in July, 2009. I figured it would be easier to copy and paste instead of referring you to the old post. Enjoy.
Z Yesterday, I tried the EMS station in Springdale but they gave me a look like a deer caught in headlights. Today, I took a cart ride down to the Marion County police substation at RT 42 but I found out that the cart path there is under construction and could not get through. And yes I read all of the multinodal path bulletins but it did not dawn on me that the access to the police substation was closed. It was a nice ride and it cooled me off from my golf outing this morning. I sent a note to The Villages and was sent a PDF that covers it all with all of the whereas and wherefores but I am asking to see if I can post the entire PDF. I don't want to get into any trouble. But as a forerunner, here are some excerpts. Enjoy!! WHEREAS the E9-1-1 Emergency Number Telephone System is intricately intertwined, related to and dependent upon a uniform addressing system; and WHEREAS, Marion county recognizes that readily locating and finding the proper location is vital to providing fire and emergency services WHEREAS E9-1-1 Emergency Number Telephone System is established to promote, protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Marion County, Florida; and the Board of County Commissioners of Marion County has determined that it is in the best interest of the public health, safety and well being of the citizens of Marion County to use and enforce a uniform street numbering system, so that every building in Marion County shall have a uniquely numbered address; There is adopted for the numbering, naming and designation of thoroughfares, alleys, and public and private ways in the County, the system known as the Quadrant System whereby the County is divided into four Sections designated northeast (NE), northwest (NW), southeast (SE) and southwest (SW). 1. Avenue: A north/south running road, primarily within the first third of the grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line. 2. Avenue Road: A north/south running meandering road within the first third of its grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line, usually crossing grid lines, named from the most major intersection. 3. Court: A north/south running road, primarily within the second third of the grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line. 4. Court Road: A north/south running meandering road within the second third of its grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line, usually crossing grid lines, named from the most major intersection. 5. Terrace: A north/south running road, named primarily from the third third of the grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line. 6. Terrace Road: A north/south running meandering road within the third third of its grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line, usually crossing grid lines, named from the most major intersection. 7. Circle: A north/south road that takes a circular position, ends back upon itself, ends back upon another road from which it originates or takes any shape other than a conventional quadrant system road name designation. 8. Street: An east/west running road, named primarily from the first third of the grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line. 9. Street Road: An east/west running meandering road within the first third of its grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line, usually crossing grid lines, named from the most major intersection. 10. Place: An east/west running road, named primarily from the second third of the grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line. 11. Place Road: An east/west running meandering road within the second third of its grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line, usually crossing grid lines, named from the most major intersection. 12. Lane: An east/west running road, named primarily from the third third of the grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line. 13. Lane Road: An east/west running meandering road within the third third of its grid, closest to the zero (0) grid line, usually crossing grid lines, named from the most major intersection. 14. Loop: An east/west road that takes a circular position, ends back upon itself, ends back upon another road from which it originates or takes any shape other than a conventional quadrant system road name designation. So it you made it this far it is like I said in my original post. I live in Marion county. My understanding is that the direction (SE, etc) and the number (91st, etc) is for fire and police call directions. THe PDF is is from the Marion County website and is their ordinance. Here is the full PDF for the doubters: http://www.marioncountyfl.org/911Mgm...gOrdinance.pdf Z

Z, thanks for the info! I wonder what, exactly, constitutes zero (0) on the grid?
I ask because in Utah ground zero was always the LDS temple in the big cities, and the addresses were numbered by their distance from the temple... for example 455 East 300 South. This meant you were 3 blocks south and 4 1/2 blocks east of the temple. Some of the streets/avenues/boulevards also had names, but the post office didn't want mail addressed to 45 East Broadway -- they wanted mail addressed to 45 East 300 South. The same was probably true for the police and fire departments. Does anyone know if they just picked a random starting place for zero on the Marion County grid, or is it a special landmark? ![]()
