We are concerned that the water from the outside hose spigots is not drinkable nor suited for watering the tomato plants we have in planters. Does anyone know if this is true? What is the source of that water?

shut off your house water and see if it shuts off your spigots , if it does its drinkable.

The water from your outside spigots is drinkable. It is the same as your inside water.

The water from the hose bibb attached to your house is definitely drinkable. But, don't drink it from a hose connected to the hose bibb, because the hose can contaminate the water.

You can buy garden hose at Amazon where the water is drinkable from the hose. I bought that type of hose to water our garden here up north.

OP you may want to contact the water district because they have the answer to your question. perhaps i misunderstood but it may not be the same for all districts. That is what I came to understand when I called the water utility.... they wanted to know in what district I lived.

I am in district 5 and the house water and outside spigot flow are one in the same.

The outside bib water is the same water that comes into your house by the building code. If you don't believe then do as one poster said turn off your house water in the garage and see if it does not turn off your outside water.

I think I'm in trouble too...I drank from the hose all the time as a kid...but maybe Iowa water from the hose is different.

I always let it run for a bit for the water to get cold. Maybe this washed out the bad stuff

Well, we Texans who used to drink rain water out of a horseshoe track always considered water from a garden hose to be a real step up.

I think the original poster was concerned about reports that in some locations the irrigation water is grey water (reclaimed, but not potable.)

I cannot believe that building codes would allow grey water in residential locations, but agree with retiredguy123 about how to test to verify that water in the house is the same as that coming out of the garden hose.
