There have been studies done (I saw one on 20/20 a few years ago) that show that people actually drive FASTER in fog. That is assuming they are not actively looking at their speedometers. It had something to do with the fog tricking the mind into thinking they were going slower than they actually were. The average speed was 7.5 miles an hour over what they thought.

On a recent trip to the Tampa Area from TV, I got stuck in a very heavy localized downpour. I could not see more than 15 feet or so ahead of me and was doing about 40mph on the Suncoast Parkway. A few cars sped past me but I do not remember any doing more than 60 mph or so.

I usually go just about the speed limit or maybe a few miles over it.
