To clarify, I think it is a good idea to install a filter in the main irrigation pipe, if you need it. But, every nozzle has a cheap plastic filter that is worthless. Those filters don't do anything but cause the nozzle to clog and stop working. It is a waste of time to remove and clean a filter whose only purpose is to protect a 2 dollar nozzle from breaking. If a nozzle breaks, just screw in another one.

I've had my filter installed and never see dirt or have clogged sprinker filters. I also have misters which used to clog all the time until I got the main irrigation filter. Now, I can say once the main filter is installed it will take some time for all the sediment and crud to wash out of the irrigation piping but once done, I've seen very little sediment. Also you need the right filter mesh size to make it effective. I have a 140 stainless mesh filter. Some go with the 100 or less if it gets clogged too often.

You are also probably speaking about the basic irrigation spray heads. I have all Rotator heads and they are not $2. But at the end of the day, it takes me 10 minutes to unscrew and hose the main filter once a month or more when the pond water is bad vs going to every sprinkler head and changing it's filter.

Apparently, some people have better irrigation water than others. I have never needed a main filter on the irrigation system. If I have a clogged nozzle, I just remove the filter and throw it away. Problem solved.

Is your irrigation water potable drinking water or pond water? If you live above 466A you probably have one water source for both drinking and irrigation water. And you are correct. Depending on where you live, the pond water comes from a different pond and the water quality will vary.

I live just south of 466A in Pine Ridge. My irrigation water is not potable water. It is reclaimed pond water. But, in 8 years, I have only had a few issues with clogged nozzles.
