Default Payment at Moving Sales, FB Marketplace, etc.

Hi all. When you all have moving or estate sales or sell items on social media, what forms of payment do you accept for the bigger ticket items?

What do you think of accepting checks?

Thanks for any input.

Personal check or cashier's check, no. Cash, yes. Another option is to meet at a bank and have the buyer initiate a bank check in your name.

Cash is King. I would accept Zelle or Pay Pal but then I might adjust my prices to cover the fees...

You'd be out of your mind to take a check. Just my opinion.

Wow, it's gotten that bad huh? Checks are now out of the question? I used to sell at music conventions in the '80s and never had a problem with a check.

I guess the good news is the buyer won't be surprised or miffed if I refuse checks.

I’ll take 20 gold pieces but the buyer probably won’t like my conversion rate.

Also watch your stuff like a hawk.

Friends had a moving sale and a number of items grew legs and left.

The worst was laptop with power cord/. Guy wants to be laptop and claims powercord is missing and wants discount. Would bet he had it in his pocket or elsewhere in his possession.

Villagers don't trust anyone. They move down here to hide from the inevitable and complain about everything.

I take checks with appropriate ID and have not had a bounced one for years (might be decades)

Ya, I know about the "complain about everything" part, but what do you mean by "they move down here to hide from the inevitable"? Just curious.

Venmo is another option... No fees if the account is linked to a bank account.

Highly disagree with your comments about Villages not trusting anyone. Too many dishonest people out there these days for me to accept a check from someone we do not know.

Venmo, PayPal or Zelle. Generally no fees involved in these.

Anyone who shows up to an estate sale/yard sale/ garage sale wanting to pay with a check is a crook or a dumba$$. If they can give you a check they can get you cash (if they have the funds). As previously stated Zelle or Venmo are other safe options. Counterfeit cash is another thing to be concerned about on a big ticket item. I sold a truck to a guy who I thought was pretty sketchy so I met him at his bank and watched him withdraw the cash.
