Default Water Usage

Need a little help here please.
I'm wondering if anyone has a general idea about how much water is used for watering your lawn.
I know there are a lot of depending factors, I'm just looking for generalities.

The reason for asking is I just received our ultility bill. This is the 1st full bill since we closed on our home at the end of June.

Since we are not fully retired, we do not live in our home full time.
As a matter of fact, we are there Saturdays & Sunday mornings only.

The water usage was a little over 12,000 gallons. I was shocked.
Then I remembered that the water is used for our lawn watering.

Our primary home is on well water for the sprinklers so quite honestly, I don't have a clue as to the usage for watering the lawn.

Our lot is small, I believe the sprinklers come on twice a week.

I'm just curious. Does watering your lawn use that much water ?
Is it possible I may have a water leak somewhere ?

Thanx for all your help.

With all the rain we've had I have turned my lawn watering off for most of the past 4 months. We're getting enough water with the rain to keep our lawns in good shape. It sure helps with the water bill.

I have analyzed water usage (north of 466) and have 3 sprinkler zones. Each watering consumes approx. 750 gallons meaning that over a month's period of time I would use approx. 6000 gallons of water assuming I watered twice a week. Sounds high but this is factual. I believe the VCDD estimates that a Designer home will average approx. 11,000 -12,000 gallons of usage per month. It seems that your total consumption is pretty much in line.

If the sod is brand new - perhaps the water settings are more often than it will be once the sod is established.

if you call the water company they will help you estimate sprinkler useage.
They will ask how many zones, how long to run, how many days per week and then tell you an approximate useage. I find their number is pretty close.

Look at your bill it breaks down house and sprinkler use.

New lawns maybe watered each day so make sure you change to 2 days in the summer. Also look at the run time. Cut back. Probably 40 to 50 minutes per zone??? Check the system each month to see that all the heads are working. I turn mine off for the next cycle if it rained a day or two before the system is scheduled to turn on. The auto on off does not skip as many days as I skip.

Before you turn off the irrigation system, either look at the lawn or get a neighbor or friend to look at it. If it is a new home, the turf may still be busy filling in between the chunks of sod and growing longer roots. First few months are critical. After that, the advice about cutting way back makes sense.

If you haven't attended one of the monthly new resident "Florida friendly landscaping" presentations by the nice people from the extension service, do so when you come back - you'll learn a great deal. They also do a variety of other presentations (all free) every month. The two extension agents who do most of the Sumter county presentations have extensive experience in this area. (Oh yeah, they both have a good sense of humor and are good teachers)

And they love to answer questions. I took along pics of my turf. After looking at 3, I got a concise set of instructions on how to fix the problems. Lawn is now lush and the envy of my neighbor.
