Apparently, if your towel attached to your golf bag covers a tail light so that the brake or directional light is not visible it is a $125 fine, so tuck it in around your club heads.

I've noticed light visibility problems on other carts, and also that on my cart (a 4 seater) if people are in the rear their legs may cover the lights. Not because of a ticket, but because I didn't want someone missing me, I added tail lights to the roof.

Turn signals, brake lights, safety on the road, this is a bad thing?

The issue is that towels do in fact create a potential hazard by covering the tail light/turn signal and should be corrected to not do so.

To demonize those who would enforce the issue for the sake of safety is sort of a distorted view....eh?

What would the law enforcers who are ever present at school crossings be labeled?

It is pretty obvious in our lives that where ever there is enforcement there is adherence to the law, therefore bring on the enforcement and ticket the you know what of the violators.

I agree that it's an enforceable infraction. But the question is, "who's gonna enforce it?" Certainly not the Sheriff's Department. Neighborhood watch has no authority to do it. So, it's going to go unenforced.

But think for a moment of the courtroom scene. Baliff: "......Docket number 123456, The people versus Joe Village, driving with golf towel hanging over taillight in the first degree." Judge: "Mr. Village, how do you plead?" Joe: "Not guilty your honor, I tucked my towel into my bag before I left the house, and didn't know that it had blown out and was hanging over the light, until the Villages SWAT team surrounded my cart." Judge: "Bail is set at $10,000." Joe: (being dragged screaming from the courtroom) "I'm innocent I tell you, innocent, you'll never make this stick."

The post that reminds one to keep towels off tail and turn signal lights is noteworthy, however, the $125 fine to me is hearsay. And I agree who will write the ticket?

I did a quick review of the Florida statute regarding golf cart operation. I don't see a requirement for brake lights or turn signals unless the cart is operated between sunset and sunrise. I think it would be hard to ticket someone for something that isn't required in the first place. (I've observed a few carts without any lights.)

Common sense should prevail - the lights were put there to make a safer vehicle, covering them with a golf towel just opens up another opportunity for an accident.

I saw this posted in two other places. What is the difference in a golf towel covering the brake light/turn signal or a broken taillight or a blown bulb when you are in the middle of the street trying to make a left hand turn. In a car it is a ticketable offense and is probably the same in a cart once you are on the public roadway.

Also, some of these cart drivers put on their blinker and move into the traffic lane without knowing if their blinker is even seen. I moved my towel to the other side so it would not be covering my taillight/blinker.

Please don't give me the rumor response until you at least think about it.

The safety consideration alone is important... especially as TV gets more and more crowded.

Allow me to point out that you cannot get around TV to do all the things you want to do without sharing the road with full sized vehicles. Maybe somebody has a secret that I don’t know about but I believe I’m correct on this.

So why wouldn’t you want to make yourself as visible as possible in a mostly fiberglass vehicle with little or no protection. Am I missing something here?

SteveFromNY, good idea. Maybe you could share your retro fits with others in the golf cart forum.
