Default Attic Storage

I read on some posts that people put all sorts of things in the garage attic and then others warn about problems with the heat and accompanying humidity!

Can you please describe what you store in the attic area above the garage and moreso, have you had any problems when retiriving the goods in the attic after a summer? I know alot of people put Xmas decorations and suitcases up there ...and some of you may have an attic fan. SO lets hear the good and the bad if there are any.

Most Christmas decorations do OK. NOT CANDLES!! Luggage OK. Beyond that I wouldn't put anything up there of value. I have other "stuff" but if I lose it no big deal. One other thing, no paper. Not only prone to heat but prone to bugs and varmints (mice and squirrels etc.).

same as any other attic space. if it's something that's sensitive to heat (and critters/bugs), I'd think twice about putting it up there

Could you store paper things in one of those big plastic containers? Or was I not listening as usual. ;D

Our sellers left us an attic full of 'stuff.' Besides a ton of Christmas decorations (that included Christmas candles that we were surprised to find were in good condition!), there were clothing, power tools, sports equipment, luggage, pieces of carpeting, you name it. We donated most everything of value to Relay for Life and threw out much of the rest; we ourselves have not stored anything in the attic (so far...). And one of the first things we did in our home was install a solar attic fan to help keep the attic cooler, something we know from past experience is a good thing to do and that we highly recommend!

Don't live permanently yet, but we put lots of boxes up there last Aug in the middle of the heat. I couldn't believe how cool it was up there. My husband checked in September and it was still cool. We don't understand. I don't believe we have any kind of fan. Garage is on the east side of the house but I would still think it would be smoking up there. I don't get it but I love the storage. :dontknow: :dontknow:

Smalldog SEZ if you put in subflooring to support storage, make sure that it is shimmed up to stay free of the wiring ............. shortly after having ours was installed (along with attic stairs) we began having electrical problems such as the one GFI would pop and would only reset sometimes in damp weather :dontknow: which of course makes no sense at all ??? so after trying the replacing off the GFI at the start of the string and after all neighborhood handymen were consulted :#1: a electrician was brought in and after several hours of scaring the blank-blank out of me :......... he just for grins and giggles peered into our attic and found not only 2 pinched wires but also where a restraining screw had been driven into the wiring ........ one was the fault of the original construction and one was from those nice young men who put the subflooring into the
attic ......... having repaired those faults no further problems occurred ;D
