Pay bills by mail, make deposits by phone/online/mail, get cash back from store purchases when cash is needed. We don't write more than a few checks a year, but don't need a local checking account to do that.

I have done the same thing, moved from Minneapolis to Detroit a couple of years ago but continue to do my banking with the General Mills Credit Union. I have opened a local savings account with Chase so I it would be easier for me to deposit checks but do all of my banking through the credit union. I also only write a few checks a year.
