Three years ago, The New York Times reported on a study that had been published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. The study generated discussion on whether gel and foam sanitizers get the job done.
The answer: they do, as long as the alcohol concentration of the sanitizer is between 60 - 95 percent. The Times reported health officials say it takes an alcohol concentration of at least 60 percent to kill most harmful bacteria and viruses. Check the active ingredients listed on the label of any hand sanitizer you may consider buying. By making sure the alcohol concentration is at least 60 percent, you’re making sure the product works. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/21/he...gewanted=print

wash your hands as often as you can and keep the bottle of hand sanitizer handy for when you can't.
Too much of the sanitizer is not good.....it can lower your immunity to simple germs...soap and water are just as effective and less harmful.

I wonder who let an English major into this scientific discussion.
JeanneBeannie mentioned escalators already, but Nonie is not worried about them. She should be. They're very bad. My wife and I were on an escalator in a store this winter when there was a power outage. We were stuck there for two hours. |

Well, K, I guess you better start practicing your kicking. Kicking really, really high. You know what I mean. Like those cancan dancers.

Everything that is shared is a potential surface for sharing germs.... eating out for me becomes a real phobia.....everything that comes out of the kitchens or bar are touched by serveral people.....Just something to think about. Just keep washing , washing and washing somemore.
Today as I was picking up fresh produce at the store I was thinking how many people have touched this apple.....drives me crazy. The man standing next to me sneezing on the fruit....come on doesn't he know better?? If I sound alittle phobic....I guess I am.

Had a friend with MRSA about 18 months ago. He was told shopping carts and gas pumps are awful. I keep Purell in my purse and use it often. I also carry the antibacterial wipes in case the grocery stores are out of them.
I don't think there's an incident mentioned in this thread that I haven't encountered and used either my Purell or wipe. I'll even pull out one of the wipes in the movie theater and wipe off the seat arms. Lord only knows who was touching that and I'm not eating my popcorn along with their germs! Don't think anyone mentioned the serving utensils along buffet lines yet. Yep, as soon as we return to the table after serving ourselves at a buffet, out comes the Purell. Monk is definitely my kind of guy. |

Also worry about that bottle of ketchup that's on your table at a restaurant.
An ATM machine.

I agree with Beady. Use common sense and know that unless your immune system is compromised in some way that it is building up immunity constantly.
I remember that my cousin got polio and the rest of us kids who saw him a lot got awful sore throats and stiff necks. (those were symptoms) The cousin who got it and thankfully survived without disability was the child of the aunt who was very very careful of germs and kept him in a LOT. Our doctor told us that we who got the sore throats at the same time had probably had immunizing cases of Polio. You can become obsessed or just use common sense, wash your hands, and when you don't, the exposure may be helping you. There is no use worrying yourself to death. |
