Default Bicycle Riders

Why can't bicycles be relegated to either the streets or the MMP's? I understand that the roads are public, but I suspect the counties/towns can prohibit them ... they do most everything else the Developer asks them to do.

Why do they have the right to pick & choose where they want to operate? Why aren't they confined to one or the other ... roads or MMP?. Admittedly, I have a strong dislike for anyone who rides a bicycle and thinks it's a car. With that prejudice in mind ... WTF do they think they are?

On the MMP when it suits their purposes ... on the roads when they want that ... going through the roundabouts ... on the grass? Wherever they want, at their whim. What gives them carte blanche ?

& what's with the MMP's? As I understand it, they were designed for "golf carts" and/or walkers & bicyclists. Now it's every manner of scooters, mini-bikes, motorized bicycles, motorized skateboards, ATV's ...what's next, jet packs?

I was traveling to Glenview yesterday, on an MMP in my Golf Cart. I was marginally exceeding the speed limit. I was passed by what I *thought* was an Atomic Cart, but when I saw the Logo on the back, I'm sure it was a Toyota/Prius logo. It was unquestionably travelling over 30 mph.

It helps to know history.

Bicycles existed before automobiles or golf carts.

Bicycles, as 'vehicles' although not 'motor vehicles'have rights to the roadway as they have been codified to have those rights.

Horses existed before bicycles. How many have you seen on Morse Blvd this week?

We drive our cars wherever we need to go.

Since all of the vehicles you mentioned are smaller and more vulnerable than our cars, I am not concerned about them.

Oh, come on now you been here long enough to know..…what about walkers and those e-bikes too? Don’t get me started on the ghost cart going down the path or road in the dark with no taillights on.

Electric bicycles on walking paths

It's getting crazy. I've been here 5 years and when I got here, I hardly ever saw anything other than legit golf carts & some bicycles on the MMP's. Now it's every possible mode of transportation. I hold my breath, every time I go over the bridge in Lake Sumter. I can't imagine what it's like on that bridge up by "historic district".

Today it was bicycles in roundabouts and everywhere else .. doing what bicyclists always seem to do ... ride like they own the road.

Speaking of the bridge, when I was going across it tonight, there was a guy in "golf cart" parked watching the sunset or whatever. His cart was at least 12''-13' long. Some sort of retro mod thingie, with 2 complete passenger compartments. Thankfully, it didn't have a golf club rack on the back.

As someone who very much likes to ride a bicycle and drive both a golf cart and automobile, I have no problem with bikes on both the roadways and MMP’s. What I very much dislike are bicyclists who don’t ride single file, who think they own either the road or MMP’s, and the spandex clad group riders who take over the traveling lanes. Why can’t bike riders simply ride single file, with a rear view mirror, and get the hell out of the way when a motorized vehicle approaches them? Unfortunately, the bad etiquette bike riders cause non deserving anger at all bike riders.

For safety reasons, groups of bicycles riding on a multi-lane public road are allowed to "own the lane." Often there's no place they can pull over TO, if a car tries to pass them in the same lane they're driving in (yes, that happens).

If it's just one or two or even 3 bikes riding together, it's good manners for the cyclists to move apart and single-file it until the cars have passed them. But more than that would pose a danger to the cyclists, the car drivers, and be especially annoying to anyone wanting to turn right if there are 10, 20, even 30 cyclists all riding single file across that right turn road.

I think it's super rude for cyclists to ride beside each other, taking up the only through lane, going only 7mph in a 15mph zone. That happened yesterday, I was in my cart heading toward the golf cart bridge on the historic side, the posted speed limit at the Paradise rec area is 15. I was stuck behind these two cyclists who rode between 5-8mph all the way from the Boone gate to the bridge. I couldn't pass them because cars were coming toward us from the other direction.

Was I in a rush? Kinda, yeah. I'd put in an order for a hot sandwich and was heading over to pick it up. It takes longer to drive a car to Spanish Springs from my house, than it does to take the golf cart.

This time though my hot sandwich was almost cold by the time I got it home.

Big scare for me the other day. I turned right onto Pinellas from eastbound 466A only to find a bicycle coming at me in my lane on the wrong side of the divided road. Lucky I saw her in time to avoid a head-on collision. Seemed to be oblivious that she was to travel with traffic rather than against.

My point exactly. Expressed more succinctly.

I’m thinking (for safety purposes) about taking up skydiving, bridge bungee jumping or hang gliding instead of bike riding in TV.

Why can't the more intolerant people put themselves in the shoes of others? Why can't they understand that some cyclists don't want to deal with folks walking dogs on leashes on MMPs, or deal with the fear of coming down the incline to a tunnel wondering whether a golf car might just shoot out in front of them. Why can't they imagine cyclists who don't feel that they can maintain a pace suitable for roads, or who worry about the inattentive or less competent drivers on the roads? Why have they not thought about where it might be safe to use skates?

Personally, I feel that the ones most likely to be complaining are the ones who are the most self-centered. I don't think that it is just that they became less tolerant with age.

If something that someone is doing seems stupid, wrong, etc. Take a deep breath. You likely have never been in that person's situation. There are probably very many things that make what they are doing quite reasonable, or even smart. Think that what they are doing makes sense. Try to figure out why.

With all due respect, it is not safe for bicyclists to ride single file to the side of the path. Carts pass way too close to the rider. Same goes for pedestrians. It’s terrifying having a cart pass too close. I don’t like getting stuck behind bikes/pedestrians/slower carts either but it happens when we all have to share.

I’m waiting to see the uptick in e-bike accidents. I’ve seen many an e-bike traveling 25-30 mph on the MMP’s. Bikes + old people +.speed = disaster.
