I was having dinner with neighbors tonight and this rather exciting subject came up -- I guess a comment on how unexciting the general conversation was. Anyway, one of the ladies said that on several recent visits to our local Rec Center pool (Allamanda), the area was covered with bird excrement --- on the tables, chairs, ground all around the pool, everywhere. And she said the place had been closed just a few days previously for a cleaning. Another lady commented that this was not a problem specific to Allamanda, that other Rec Centers she'd visited were just as bad. (No comment at all about why the women notice this stuff but we guys remain obtuse) Yet another of the ladies said that in previous life visits to Florida, she had seen pools with wires strung above them in a manner that discouraged the birds from frequenting the place. I didn't give it a lot of thought at the time, as hard as that might be to believe, but since then I've wondered a bit about it. Wouldn't the wire, in fact, attract the damned birds much like a power line does? Has anyone ever seen wires used in such a manner? Is bird excrement really that big of a problem? Should someone suggest to the CDD that they look into the bird wire solution?
Gawd I've got to get some kind of a life. Here I am sitting at my computer at 3:20 AM thinking about bird :edit:. Beats arguing politics.

Wow Muncle,
You have just burst my balloon!! :'( :'( :'( We bought right next to the new Odell rec center, thinking how lovely it would be to have a pool just fifty feet from our house that we didn't have to clean. Now at 6:00 A.M. without my first cup of coffee I hear that the view has changed. Would all of these bird droppings be from geese? The Canada Geese are attracted to water up here and mess on the golf courses. I don't know the flora and fauna of Florida yet. It guess it doesn't matter who is doing the droppings, bird :edit: is bird :edit: any way you look at it. Gee and we close on Monday. :edit:!!

Good morning gg,
What in the world is the matter with us Buckeyes? Just look at what time we get up. I will not be able to check in for awhile today so I am asking that you keep a close eye on this thread. Please make sure that nobody tries to hijack it to talk about dog :edit:. Boomer

Muncle,
I was at the Bacall pool the other day and noticed similar droppings...also, noticed a number of birds flying overhead to land in the adjoining palm trees. No such problem at our neighborhood adult pool....trees are not as close and closest ones are crepe myrtle. Based on this skimpy evidence, I would surmise that the surrounding trees are a contributing factor....type and proximity. Not sure if the wires would do much good if the problems are caused more by flyovers than by landings. Stimulating subject!!! Of course, it's 7:30am and you probably won't be awake til about noon. How does a night owl thrive in TV where life ceases to exist after 9pm??? See you at Crispers at 3pm for your breakfast??? ;D

I didn't notice any droppings at Largo when I was down there two weeks ago. I have seen the wires used at some water parks up here in the NE. I don't think FLA has a Canadian Goose issue like we do though. We also have trouble with seagulls at pools. The sea gulls hover over the pools but do not land in those with the wires. This is at large water parks though not smaller pools like the neighborhood pools in TV.

I know.
Get a plan Have everybody feed the birds. Then the developer will have to relocate them like happened with the buffalo. Boomer

In April I noticed a lot of bird droppings at the Belvedere Pool. There is a plastic owl there that gets relocated from place to place. Doesn't seem to work though.
The offenders are crows, not Canadian geese. The crows bathe in the pool, drink from the pool, :edit: in the pool, and don't have to pay amenities.
