Default Just a reminder for golf cart drivers

We had a scary situation this afternoon. While on the cart path near the Sarasota chip and putt area coming back from Publix, we had a golf cart with two ladies come in the opposite direction. I could see they were chatting with each other while driving. As we approached closer, their cart started drifting closer and closer to us in our lane. The driver of the other cart was looking over towards Sarasota while driving, not looking at the path ahead of her. She started drifting into our lane and I yelled to my husband to look out! She had drifted into our lane forcing us off the path and onto the grass. It was pretty scary and had we not reacted we may have been hit head on. My reminder is even though there is a lot to look at here, please stop your cart and look. Don't try to drive and look too. You could be an accident waiting to happen. With the cart paths getting busier we all need to be more careful, drive slower and keep you eyes ahead.

The population will dramatically increase soon. Please all keep an eagle eye for new cart drivers and careless ones.

If you noticed the cart drifting why didn't you honk the horn? Glad you were able to get on grass instead of hitting a curb.

Kitty, my husband was driving and he rarely uses the horn. I am a horn user and probably would, have honked the horn. However, things do happen kind of fast and I don't think he thought of it. I'm going to start using the horn when coming out of tunnels as the other night we had someone cut the tunnel corner really close and almost ran onto us. Just a quick toot!

Just remember how the residents feel who live near the tunnels that will have to listen to all those "quick toots" all day if everybody did that.

My husband won't use the horn either. Once at the TG mailboxes, he saw a guy backing a Caddy recklessly right toward where we were parked. He said Brace yourself, but I said Honk the @#$%^& horn!! My car has been hit three times in two years by idiot drivers. he did honk the horn, and the guy slammed on the brakes. he had obviously never seen us parked across from him. Now my husband will use the horn if he thinks we are about to die... but only if.

And you are right, things like what you experienced happen very quickly. There are a lot of woulda-shouldas.

Yikes!!! Yes....to EVERYONE who drives cars, trucks, suv's and golf-carts PLEASE drive defensively!! The other day on 466 and 101---folks got impatient for the lights to turn so proceeded through on red! Then have seen folks doing U-turns in the middle of the roads...this is is both vehicles and carts with traffic coming and going! As was stated before...things will get busier as we head into the "high" season and all the "birds", "snowflakes" and renters coming down. Bet we'll see posts like this one more and more on TOTV.

While I'm on it...Grandparents, your cart isn't a fun toy for the kiddies to drive. Saw a Grandma the other day with her foot on the pedal but a little guy about 4 (sitting in the driver's seat) steering and heading towards Odell Circle. They have to be 14 years old to drive a golf cart!!!!

Protecting life and limb from dangerous drivers is more important than protecting the nearby resident's peace and quiet.

Does anyone know who to contact about getting speed bumps installed at tunnel entrances? Just one speed bump parallel to the tunnel on each end should encourage drivers to make wider turns.

I'm still waiting for those drivers who make dangerous tunnel entrances and exits to explain to the rest of us why they do so.

Wow, that's a great idea. A little curb or speed bump that would keep people from making a wide turn. Self-correcting, no horns needed. You're brilliant!

Because they don't know how to take a corner properly. They probably learned to drive in "Dad's" car and just barely passed the test.
