Default Bugs....

Since being here (2 years) we've seen very few bugs in T.V. I have heard that "they" spray for mosquitos etc. HOWEVER, lately there seems to be an infestation of little black gnats. They're prolific on the golf courses PLUS can't be out working in the yard or even sitting on the driveway (to enjoy a nice evening with neighbors). Anyone know if there's a reason the spraying doesn't irradicate these pests as well??

I do know that soon the LoveBugs will be back too---also know NOTHING gets rid of those!!

When we first came here from New Jersey where the mosquitoes are as big as B-29's and the salt marsh greenhead flies (Tabanus nigrovittatus), bite like hungry piranha, we were pleasantly surprised by the relatively modest "bug" population. I spoke with a native farmer from the area and he explained that the climate here, unlike the the damp, sub-tropical coastal regions, is considered arid. He explained the dryness is not conducive to supporting many species that thrive on the coast. Sounded logical to me. I would certainly yield to someone more conversant with the subject. For certain, the climate hasn't precluded all "pests". Watch out for those fire ants.

Interesting!!! Still---wondering what's up with those pesky gnats!! Have heard that folks on the golf courses say they're wicked!

Fireants...yup we KNOW about those! My "better half" got attacked a bit the first year we lived here, while working out in the yard. They're nasty!!!!

What I can't stand are the palmetto bugs but at least they are easy to kill as they don't run when a light is turned on. One just scared the hell out of my wife as she was taking clothes out of the dryer. It must have come in through the vent after the drying cycle finished otherwise I would think it would have died. Time to call Bates again.

We've battled those nasty critters for a few days. Got Massey out and put a barrier down outside and inside. Hopefully they will move on.....

JenAjd, when Lake County sprays they are spraying for "mosquitoes and other biting arthropods of public health importance in order to reduce the risk of arboviral disease transmission and to ensure a reasonable quality of life for all residents and visitors of Lake County."

The program isn't just a random spraying either. They do research with collection trap devices to determine where and when to spray. The gnats you are seeing aren't affected by the malathion and permethrin insecticides. The gnats are not of any public health importance and part of the arboviral disease transmission targeted by the spraying.

They are a nuisance to some people, but not a public health problem.

That explains the device I saw at Pelican golf course. It was connected to a battery by the swamp on hole #6. Thanks BK!

I use "Bug-X" when playing golf, but still get them around my ears - especially when putting! LOL

Here is a link that may offer some solution/help - http://www.mosquitobarrier.com/gnats.

I hate the critters too!!
